Soundgarden.

Repeatedly seeing a band trying so hard to be rock gods while performing an a stage maybe 18in high can really taint your perspective on them. Because of that the only Soundgarden I can enjoy is Loud Love. Though I would put Temple above both AIC and PJ strangely enough.

Being extremely lucky to see all of these bands live several times before their major label records hit the shelves, their lives shows informed how I saw and heard their records. All absolutely amazing bands.

PJ came off way to earnest but by the time Ten came out, they really learned how to own any stage. They were meant to be on a big stage. Because of that I alway have felt removed from their records.

AIC right from the start had the most 'rock star' presence on a stage, of any size. You just needed to see them once and you knew they were going to be big. The true successor to Mother Love Bone, but too much on the hair metal side of the spectrum for me.

Mudhoney is the greatest garage rock band ever. Born to play small, sweaty clubs. Seeing them live for Superfuzz felt like seeing the Stooges play without Iggy. Just as alive and dangerous, just less peanut butter. Having Mark Arm scream "Touch me I'm sick" into my face is a cherished memory.

Nirvana was like seeing a hypnotic primal scream therapy in action. You could not turn away and loved every show I got to see them play. I saw them 5 times and only once as a headliner, but they always came to play full force.

Lanegan and the Trees were like seeing a mountain come alive while several sasquatches tossed giant boulders at you. Not sure what the fuck that means. Seeing Mark just stand there while this buzz saw wall of sweaty hair twirl around him was mesmerizing. Him just standing there felt even more ominous.

Soundgarden just played shirt-less too often. But Kim is still a guitar god.

Yeah, at this point I would rather listen to Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, Tad, The Melvins, or Seaweed than any of the big 4 outside of Nirvana.

Different strokes for different folks. For me Nirvana is energy and punk rock, AIC is the most languid of the 4, I enjoy all four bands quite a bit and don’t find any of them boring but I have to be in the right mood to enjoy AIC. Kurt writes so many pure pop hooks that his music is never not compelling regardless of ny mood.
 
I don't even know where I would place Screaming Trees in all of that, they are just a different thing. Even with Mudhoney and Melvins, they fit that general "grunge" thing (yeck), but outside of Sweet Oblivian and after - the Trees were this crazy psychedelic surf band with punk tendencies.

TBH, I have a tough time grouping Nirvana with the other “Big Four” I think they arrive at a similar place but took very different paths to get there.
Nirvana > Punk
Pearl Jam > Classic Rock
AIC > Metal
Soundgarden > Metal

I think Nirvana fits in better with bands like Dinosur Jr., Meat Puppets, and Pixies they they do with Alice and Chains and Pearl Jam.

I mean for the very reasons you state right there, Soundgarden and AIC don't fit with the rest as they are definitively metal to me and Pearl Jam was also metal before they were well Pearl Jam. Now we are going to get in a conversation about the ludicrousness of the term "grunge" and nobody wants to rehash that...
