Pre-Order Thread

I’m making a genuine effort to shop at my local more. The pretty foil variant of this is very tempting though.

I'm making an effort to shop more local as well. And I pre-order everything through my local record shop in Salem by messaging them on FaceBook (They need a better way than FaceBook Messenger to do this).

But I often run into issues where only standard black is available if there isn't a indie exclusive variant. The colored pressings are either D2C or from specific stores.

I stopped caring about variants for the most part. A. I have an awful lot of pretty records. B. Black often sounds better C. It’s often cheaper.

Unless it's an artist exclusive that I absolutely want, I'll pre-order from my local store as well. I literally just text the owner what I'm looking for and he pre-orders it for me.

I’ve been this way for a few years now. My local is great, they all know me by name and have a discount program. Plus they give me a fair price when I sell my shit back to them. About the only stuff I buy online is stuff I can’t get locally or stuff that is super discounted,

I also rarely preorder anymore since I don’t really care about limited variants so I’m not concerned with them selling out.

I wish my local had a loyaltee program. They are a bit pricy. About $5 to $7 more than Bull Moose per pressing. But with not having to pay shipping, I think it comes pretty close to being the same, maybe $1 to $2 more still.

I'm a hoarder, I never sell back any of my old stuff.

Cause people aren’t using media mail anymore cause packages get beat up and record collectors want pristine sleeves.
Almost all of the records I buy come media mail via USPS and I've had better luck with damage using that vs any of the few records that have come via DHL, FedEx or UPS. I'm guessing they use it so they can build in some extra profit by using other carriers in which the consumer isn't as familiar with the actual cost of shipping.

I’d run out of space if I didn’t. Plus it’s nice to get an influx of cash that I don’t really budget for. Last year I bought a few pricy records and paid for a short vacation to San Francisco with the money I made. A couple years before that I bought a nice bicycle.

There has been a small number of times where I end up wanting to listen to something I’ve sold off only to be disappointed that they were no longer in my collection but even when that occurs I don’t think I have replaced anything I have sold off with new copies. So it’s working well for me.

There was a massive shift away from Media Mail last year. Lots of people are still using it. Some of the people charging crazy rates are using it.

Speaking of space, I'm out of space again. I got records piling up on the floor leaning against the bookcase. I need another bookcase but don't have any wall space to put one left.

You’re almost there. There is a point where you start putting records in bins/storage; in which case you really do become a hoarder or you start selling off the stuff you don’t listen to as much.

It’s tough to sell, I hate going through the process of deciding what to get rid of but once I do it I feel 1000 lbs lighter and the wad of cash in my pocket is a very nice reward once it’s all done.

I don't know, but I'm running into this very often this year. And it's annoying.

Last week I ordered a record that was $28.99 and the shipping was $22.50 for ground, the cheapest option.
Theres been so many albums that I've wanted to get but didn't because of the cost. I'm not spending $30 and $10 + in shipping for an album especially for a 1 lp album. Why can't places just offer $5 media mail. I'd rather have my album be protected but im not spending a lot in shipping for that. There is no reason for a us based site to offer very expensive shipping. If shipping were cheaper then I'd order albums more often.

Media mail for a single LP is over $5, then add in the cost of the mailers, packing, etc. Not defending big companies but there's no way you'll see media mail for under $8 any longer.
