Pre-Order Thread

Never heard of Crumb before but I dig it. A lot. Ordered. Thanks for all of the enthusiasm!

It's funny, because the week that VMP announced their Jinx exclusive, along with the Froth album that they still have in stock, multiple people were commenting about how happy they were that the exclusives were bunk, so that they didn't have to spend any more money after RSD and the anthology. I responded that I thought they were actually pretty good and that I picked up Crumb. Then @Lee Newman commented with a similar sentiment and the whole thing went in the other direction and sold out by the next day. That FOMO shit is real life, son!

One or two others mentioned that they were hoping that nobody would catch on, because they wanted it and were keeping it on the down low so that it wouldn't sell out.

Tbh I listened to Froth and Crumb cause both covers looked cool and picked the one I liked more. I'm glad it was Crumb, because damn, that went fast!

I think that people had just spent enough money and, when others said "there's nothing to see here," that was good news. If you don't listen to them, you can ignore it. Watching a quiet morning start to build up steam and reverse it's course like that was pretty crazy to watch though, because once one person says they're sold and then another and another and a "Tina'd" pops in, or whatever, people want to know what's going on. Someone says they're not gonna fold and they do. It's like a tsunami taking down support beams and everything starts collapsing. I think I might have remembered you posting about it on your status early on. I only recognized the name, because I'd gotten a video of theirs sent to me earlier in the year and remembered enjoying it

Yeah, I grabbed it pretty early on. My status update was probably trying to stoke the FOMO fires even more lol.

I mean, I've talked shit about VMP at times when I felt they deserved it, but that day I just felt kind of bad that those releases were being referred to as trash. Storf was online, so I wanted to say that I felt different and believed that they did a good job with it. The typical FOMO for the sake of FOMO thing is pretty nuts, but psychologically, it just puts you in a position where you need to make a quick decision whether or not you're going to regret something if you miss it and the clock is winding down. If things are quiet and the hype isn't crazy at the moment, there's a mindset where you can kind of relax and not worry about it too much. The whole Plantasia thing was interesting, because some of us have really been waiting years for that reissue and a lot of people were buying it while questioning why, at the same time. Lots of things are purchased unheard in those situations. Like so much of this stuff, Crumb just needed a couple of people to say it's worth checking out. Not everything does, but their sound seems like something that would definitely appeal to a lot of members on this forum. I mean, I'm still finding really great stuff that I should have been up on a long time ago, but somehow managed to avoid listening to until recently. The pre-order thread is really dangerous for that. Too much great stuff and too many people letting you know about it.

Yeah, Crumb deserved more attention than it was getting at first. Glad we got it to sell out. Shame we're not getting it on time, but such is life.

Yes, I love the fact that it's getting out there, but I'll wait to hear the full album before I jump
I love Miles Davis a lot and buy pretty much whatever comes out, but... As much as I love his 70s dark and chaotic trio of Dark Magus, Agharta and Pangea, I am less fond of the comeback 80s era, which strikes my ear as too smooth, with the exception of the Hot Spot soundtrack. Not a big fan of posthumous LPs where 90% of the music was laid down many years later on top of bare demos.

Michaela Anne-Desert Doves

Instant order. Michaela Anne is a great singer and her first album signed to Yep Roc (but not debut) is going to be hot. Her previous album was a favorite. Great country music!

I think regardless of the forum or any other kind of FOMO enablers, their brand is strong enough (actually, I mean their member count is high enough), that they will always be able to sell the first 300 copies of any exclusive pretty quickly.

Almost any exclusive that they have done in that amount goes pretty fast. I guess a large portion of people just think, I'll buy it and it's a small enough number that if I don't like it I should be able to sell and get my money back (or more) pretty quickly.

Maybe. I don't think that's entirely accurate, though. The Boogarins, Feels, Lafawndah, Middle Kids, and Hatchie albums are still there and those were runs of 300. Blanck Mass has passed the same window that Crumb sold out within, but time will tell on that, I guess. Grace Lightman is also still in stock. The overwhelming majority of everything else they still have, as far as store exclusives, are pressings of only 500, which still seems pretty low. I feel that FOMO/hype surrounding a release even feeds into the idea of whether you could resell it or not, if you don't like it.

The forum numbers were enough to push a lot of them over the top, especially where you had a thread reminding you of titles, discussing them, and asking for inventory counts, along with winks keeping people from buying variants elewhere. Has a single exclusive sold out since the forum was erased? It seems like the ones I remember hearing about are still there, but I don't know.

True didn't realize those were also small runs. I haven't been following around so closely, and really if that's the case they really fucked up by shutting down the forum. But we already know that :)
