Record Store Day 2023

Solid list this year, but I'll see what I'll eventually pick up. Isbell/Shires and Jonathan Richman are the only must-haves for me. May pick up Taylor Swift, Pearl Jam, Amanda Shires, Norah Jones, Beach House, Dan Penn, Son Volt, Wilco, Sigur Ros and Sir Douglas Quintet. Also eyeing that Nuggets box set...but it will probably be too pricey.
The Swedish list also has Entombeds' "To ride, shoot straight and speak the truth" which I might pick upp too.

Those unfamiliar with this Jonathan Richman album for RSD need to become acquanited.

It's genuinely a great classic country album. Probably Jonathan's best album IMO. It instantly transports to you in a dusty casino, possibly Reno in the late 70s/early 80s. It's a little pastiche and a little over the top corny but it's a delight, and those things are what make Jonathan Richman so special.

Probably Jonathan's best album
I will grant you it’s his best “Country” Album. As a fan of the genre I can get my Country music fix in a multitude of ways. It’s a fun genre exercise and it’s done really well but I tend to prefer Richman’s albums that are more fascinated with his love of early rock music that complement his whimsical lyrics exquisitely.

Not to say this album isn’t fun. It’s great and everybody should buy it but I think they should buy all or Richman’s albums.

I've had a look at the UK list and there are some records I would genuinely like to get, but my local store doesn't participate and the others that do really aren't very local to me.

And I'm skint 🤣
Well, this is a good place to be if you are looking for stuff online following RSD. Also keep a look out, when we get closer to the date someone usually creates a RSD wantlist thread where members that are going out can try to score some of the albums for those who can’t make it out. It’s one (of many things) this community does regularly to help each others out.

tbf I can't say I listen to a lot of country music. This was my first foray into the genre years ago when I couldn't be associated with it as a pretentious indie rock kid.

I'd say this album does have a lot of whimsical in his lyrics, "You're the One for Me", "I Must Be King", "Corner Store". Although the latter 2 are taken from his "and the Modern Lovers" days of a few years earlier, just rerecorded in a Country Style.

First impressions

Tier 1: What I'm after, but would only be really sad if I missed the first two

Soul Asylum - Unplugged
Jerry Garcia Band - How Sweet It Is
Sigur Ros - Kveikur
Porcupine Tree - IA/DW/XT
Pearl Jam - Give Way
Our Lady Peace - Collected

Tier 2: Because I probably don't need any of these

Taylor Swift - folklore: the long pond studio sessions
Scott Weiland - 12 Bar Blues
Travis - The Invisible Band: Live
Son Volt - Day of the Doug
Gong - Live
Tori Amos - B Sides

Tier 3: Because I'll probably be able to get them after

The Verve Pipe - Villains
Poe - Hello
Medeski, Martin & Wood - It's A Jungle In Here
Kittie - Until the End
Norah Jones - Little Broken Hearts: Live
Frankie and the Witch Fingers - ZAM
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Live at Levitation

Oh no doubt and it works really well within this context. My point want’s necessarily a slight against this album it was more that Richman’s album’s like I, Johnathan or Rockin’ & Romance are even better.
