Day 28: Simply the best

Wayfaring Strangers: Guitar Soli

Not a big greatest hits guy but I do love a good comp, and in my limited experience Numero does comps better than anyone. (Music-wise, anyway. Pressing isn't great.) Here is a collection of songs from private-press American primitivism guitarists, including Ted Lucas, whom VMP did an excellent exclusive of a couple years back.

Day 29: “Devolution ..”- albums that go back to basics

The blues by nature is a basic music, but even the blues can be brought back to it's roots on occaison.

In 1998, Buddy Guy released a record called Heavy Love. It was just as much funk as blues with lots of keyboards, some synths and the occasional horn. It was good.

In 2001, Buddy pulled a 180 and got back to the basics of blues - basically, summoning the devil via his guitar - with a record called Sweet Tea. It's a Buddy Guy powerhouse of raw, trance guitar and some of his most visceral vocal performances. The real deal.

This record sounds just like the cover - primal, fuzzy, evil. I think it's Buddy's best record.

Let your ears gnaw on this -

Florist – Emily Alone

Don’t have to go back too far (July 2019) for this bare-bones work from Emily Sprague, as Florist. Vocals, guitar, and occasional bird song. Beautiful, contemplative music that harkens “back to the basics” of folk music (which of course is only one way to think about this).

Thelonious Monk ‎– Solo On Vogue (Vogue, 1987 Japanese Pressing)
Thelonious Monk - Thelonious Himself (Riverside Records, 1957 Mono Pressing)

I enjoyed this one so much (great idea @Gavaxeman) that I doubled up with a second. These Monk records feature the pianist on his own, playing a mix of original compositions and standards. Solo on Vougue was Monks first solo performance, recorded in Paris for FM radio.
