Strange Musical Tales: The September 2023 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread

Day 14 - THE EVIL DEAD (Sam Raimi, 1981)
The three original films in this horror-comedy series feature the Necronomicon.
Play something that has comic lyrics, preferably darkly comic

I went with my wife's pick, she requested this for the last prompt but it works for this too I think.

The Decemberists - The Mariner's Revenge Song

Scooped! I love when they play this one live.

Day 15 - THE MUSIC OF ERICH ZANN (Lovecraft, 1921)
Play something that features a cello, a violin, a fiddle and/or a string section and/or you would consider as being “strange” music.

"Rune" - Life Cycle (1982) - Dave Holland

Jazz bassist, Dave Holland, recorded this solo CELLO album when he was ill and unable to carry the weight of a double bass. I find the song "Rune" intriguing because Holland uses both bowing and plucking techniques on it.

Day 15 - THE MUSIC OF ERICH ZANN (Lovecraft, 1921)
An old mute cellist named Erich Zann plays strange music at night to keep unknown creatures from entering his apartment building.
Play something that features a cello, a violin, a fiddle and/or a string section and/or you would consider as being “strange” music.

This was played earlier this month for another prompt, but fits really well with todays having been recorded with a 21 piece orchestra.

The three original films in this horror-comedy series feature the Necronomicon.
Play something that has comic lyrics, preferably darkly comic, and/or a cabin in the woods and/or any other horror film trope.

Super Furry Animals - Love Kraft

I'm going to keep playing SFA albums, all of which have some humor in their lyrics... today is one I don't have on vinyl yet, but the closing track is "Cabin Fever," and the album title seems to be referencing something horror related, but I can't put my finger on it...

Day 16 - ALIEN (Ridley Scott, 1979)
Play something about space and/or features grotesque designs and/or monsters and/or aliens.

When you're a Spaceman, I reckon an OD Catastrophe is about as grotesquely alien as it can get. Which, actually, depending on the Spaceman, might be monstrously good. I'm guessing J Spaceman was cool with it...

Spacemen 3 - Sound Of Confusion

Day 16 - ALIEN (Ridley Scott, 1979)
Play something about space and/or features grotesque designs and/or monsters and/or aliens.

"To The Moon And Back" - MUCH Dance 1999 (1998) - Savage Garden

This album art has a seriously "grotesque design"; luckily the compilation also has a space-related song for today's theme. To my surprise (not really), this song ALSO comes with a "grotesque" video (y)

Staying on the theme

Sarah Neufeld - Detritus

Violins, French horns, flutes and synths ahoy. Beautifully atmospheric and criminally available to pick up on cogs for about 50p

Day 16 - ALIEN (Ridley Scott, 1979)
Alien oozes with cosmic horror influence. From the discovery of the ruined alien ship being a trope out of At The Mountains Of Madness to H.R. Giger’s designs owing a clear debt to Lovecraft, Alien is basically a modern ode to cosmic horror.
Play something about space and/or features grotesque designs and/or monsters and/or aliens.

Spacehog "Resident Alien"
(1995 Sire; 2021 reissue)
Space pigs and aliens.

Parannoul - After the Magic

There are some nice string touches throughout this catchy and sublime blast of Korean shoegaze.

Day 13 - THE SHADOW OVER INNSMOUTH (Lovecraft, 1936)
The tale of an antique collector on a tour of New England, who finds a mysterious relic and learns of the human-fish hybrid people of the town of Innsmouth. There’s a weird collection of sea shanties that has been released that draws inspiration from this story, the shanties being sung from the perspective of the sailors of Innsmouth.
Play something that sounds like a sea shanty and/or references the seas and/or aquatic life and/or play something that you could consider as being an “antique” collectible and/or something that features an object on the cover that could be considered a “mysterious relic”.

Port O'Brien - All We Could Do Was Sing

Has the songs Stuck On A Boat and Fisherman's Son. One of my all time favorite albums, especially when it's snowing.
