Television

Euphoria season 1 is an all-timer for me. When I was contemplating the best debut seasons after binging (the phenomenal) Severance, it was one that came to mind.

Anyways... for a variety of reasons (mostly that it dropped right as I was moving cross country), I am just now getting to season 2.

I'm only 3 episodes in but...

It's often lamented that millenials haven't yet produced many iconic auters in film. Now, there are a couple reasons for that... A) Marvel snaps up many of the directors that have flashed talent with a promising indie B) indies don't get made like they used to and even the ones that have long festival runs often disappear into thin air due to streaming C) prestige television is king.

All of this to say-- Sam Levinson is a fucking MASTER of his craft. Just in these first 3 episodes he brought to mind Scorsese, David O' Russell and Wong Kar Wai.

Now, someone reading this probably just threw a phone across their room because this show is not for everyone. However, I stand by what I typed.

Also, for shits and giggles... my 10 favorite debut seasons of TV.

10) Rick & Morty
9) Euphoria
8) Stranger Things
7) Sopranos
6) Freaks and Geeks
5) Severence
4) The Wire
3) Legion
2) Arrested Development
1) Mr. Robot

Honorable mentions: Atlanta, Louie, Pen15, Weeds, Californication Six Feet Under, South Park, Westworld, King of the Hill.

(My list of actual favorite shows would be quite different cause a lot of them are growers ala The Americans or Parks and Rec. And a lot of shows fall the fuck off ala anything Showtime makes).

Mad Men is a top 5 all time favorite TV Show for me, one that I have rewatched in its entirety on multiple occasions. I just saw someone post this one Reddit and figured I would share here; I the US right now you can purchase the entire series via iTunes for $14.99…

Had the blu ray boxset on my list for a long time, but this is tempting.

I did it. I know it’s streaming with commercials on “FreeVee” (what a terrible fucking name) and I downloaded the series in HD via extra legal means a while ago but the ability for me to marathon it out with very little effort and no commercials was worthwhile for me. I think a single season usually retails for that price so getting the whole series is a nice deal.

It's definitely a top 5 series for me as well so I might do it too. I even follow 'Mad Men Quotes' on Twitter; sometimes one little quote makes me want to dive in again.

👀👀👀

I will definitely give it a go this weekend. Can't be any worse than Amazon's other fantasy series, Wheel of Terrible Wigs and Fake Scenery

Edit: Answer me this Tolkien-ers. Why did he put so much effort into the languages and naming of places in Middle Earth, but the best he could do for the home of evil is call it Mount Doom?

Aight. Who watches Euphoria? As many nice words as I typed above about Levinson and as much as I really, really enjoyed the first 6 episodes (with #5 being an instant classic)-- that finale was a freaking mess.
Both the editing and the writing.

Technically, it's got a few names:

Alternative names, in Tolkien's invented language of Sindarin, include Orodruin ("fiery mountain") and Amon Amarth ("mountain of fate").

Gotta say I love the notion of separating out and ranking first seasons of shows. It's a different art form to lay out your ideas, build narrative momentum and provide a satisfying stopping point than it is to continue a story. And you are right that there are some shows that take a while to get going and others that probably should have known where to stop (looking at you, Killing Eve).

But for some reordering and a few swaps I'd say that's a remarkably solid list.

Killing Eve S1 was great. I quit after S2 because I could sense the wheels were going to fall off.

Has anyone watched The Resort on Peacock? I mean, I know no one watches Peacock... But I checked out this show cause of Sam Esmail's involvement (turns out he only exec produced it). And it's all around a pretty fun, solid mystery show. The finale just came out and it's a great wrap up to the whole story. There's more going on than a standard mystery here, and that's kinda what hooked me. It's not a perfect show or anything, but it's good and pretty short.

Also, the big Breaking Bad re-watch has been underway for over a week now. We just made it to season 3. Setting aside the conflicted feelings I have about the s2 finale reveal (of the black and white stuff), I think that season is a near-perfect season of tv. I am super enjoying this re-watch. And so excited to get to seasons 4 and 5 cause I think I only saw them once, maybe twice.

I'm watching the Resort, will hopefully watch the finale today or tomorrow. The two leads are just perfect, though overall I think I want to like it more than I do? I'd still recommend it, though.

Speaking of the new LOTR series, this might be of interest.

We went for a walk around one of our local villages a few weeks back and as I passed one of the antique shops I saw a copy of 'The Fellowship Of The Ring' in the window. I popped in to inquire and the owner said he totally forgot it was there and that it hasn't been touched for several years. He wanted less than the price of a new book for it so I bought it and have just started reading. It also had a fold-out map which was quite nice.
