Television

Ok I honestly can't really believe I'm saying this, but I thought the first two episodes of LOTR were actually quite good. Not perfect, but about 100 times better than I was expecting. The writing isn't quite there, the dialogue is a bit too contemporary for me in terms of the language used. I thought the movies did a good job of bridging the gap between Tolkiens heavy scholarly writing and a more viewer friendly tone without losing some of the richness of the language. The show comes off more like current tv writers trying to approximate the style of the books and kinda failing. BUT, aside from that the acting is mostly very good, the sets are absolutely off the charts great for the most part and the story is pretty dang engaging. I'm pleasantly surprised, hopefully they keep it up.

Been watching She-Hulk, its not bad! It's kinda fun and nice to see Marvel break the formula and make something light hearted.
The only thing I don't really like about it is the 4th wall breaking. Its kinda really cheesy but maybe it's done like that on purpose?

As someone who has lost interest in the MCU over the last 7-10 years this series is bringing me back. It's just a fun, breezy show that happens to feature super heroes. And Tatiana is awesome, per usual

I haven't started it yet but I hear the character does the same thing in the comics
Not familiar with the comic but I would think it would work better in a comic setting where they can have inner monologue. It's a bit jarring on the show.

I'm also watching this bc I'm a Tatiana fan. She needs to do more stuff

I think it's been a part of her character since the beginning, she's their original 4th wall breaker.
Having never watched a fourth-wall breaking Deadpool film (yet), I'm curious to see how this eventually translates when She-Hulk is in the movies (which I'm assuming she will be). Especially alongside other characters, like, how do they react when she starts talking to the camera.

Yeah, it not really an inner dialogue either. I haven’t seen the show so I can’t comment on how well it works there but I’m the books it’s very meta and surreal basically the character is aware that “you” are reading a comic book and breaks the 4th wall to provide narration but also to make jokes. Kinda like how Zach Morris would call “Time Out” and speak directly to the camera on Save By The Bell. Deadpool also does this frequently but She-Hulk did it first.

I am hoping She-Hulk is a cross between Ally McBeal and Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law anything less than that was a missed opportunity.

Also, for Futurama fans out there I am picking up a bit of Single Female Lawyer vibes from this show too

Watching the first episode right now. Really enjoying it. I will weigh in once I am done.

Okay so I agree with @Mather about the dialogue. It does sometimes take me out of the world. I really wish they would have been a bit more deliberate about that. But it is stunning to watch and after the first episode, I am going right into the second. I am way more happy with this one over what they did to The Wheel of Time and Foundation.

I thought the second episode was even better than the first FWIW.

Killing Eve S1 was great. I quit after S2 because I could sense the wheels were going to fall off.
I. Stuck half way thru the final seasons of killing eve, peaky blinders and the walking dead ...still trying to summon up the will to finish them off ..such a shame when once great shows fall off the cliff

That second episode had me on the edge of my seat. Yes, it was sooooo good. I can’t wait for the next one to drop.

I also started on The Resort and I have to echo @Bennnnn. It’s really well written and highly captivating. It feels like a better version of Lost—where the writers actually know where they are going.

I think after this I will try She Hulk because I need something lighter.

Watched both eps last night, and both it and HotD are just not grabbing me. I will wait until the seasons are done and come back to them.

My problem with HotD is that is does not feel epic like GoT with all its location and sprawling story. HotD is very focused on the inter family politics and I find that much more boring. I think they made a mistake not focusing on the Targaryen conquest and aftermath.

Like I said, I will wait until both series are done and give them another try.

Enjoying the LOTR thing so far, the locations and cinematography are beyond what I’d expect of tv. The dialogue is stilted though and I’m not sure how to feel about the very Oirish presentation of the Harfoots.
Re-watching GoT again last year the LOTR now, not sure how much of a fan I am of the use of very over-the-top accents to indicate certain regional traits. Sometimes it feels like it is only a few steps away from this...
