Is anyone else just a little underwhelmed by The Last of Us?

Maybe it’s because I played the game already but Joel and Ellie are rarely the most interesting part of any of the best episodes (3 and 5 so far) and although it’s cruel and handsomely produced and well acted, I feel like we’ve been in this territory before. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a really good show. But everytime someone mentions it, I want to shake them violently and yell “STATION ELEVEN!”at the top of my lungs.

It might not be fair to compare since one post apocalyptic story had more pew pew and clickers while the other focuses on the aftermath of a pandemic but it’s hard to ignore the overlap.

I mean the writer of Station 11 disagrees with you. Station Eleven is high on my watch list (currently tackling Leftovers) but to my understanding is also about culture as opposed to community.

I do wish they had rewritten the timeline of the show to give some space for Ellie and Joel to breather b4 introducing Sam and Henry. The condesing of a 20 hour game into a 10 hour show is starting to be felt.

What I'm most impressed with (other than the production design) is the way they are adding to the game in a way that fleshes Joel and Ellie characters / motivations for the decisions I know are coming. Especially S2 / Ellie.

also never watched Mad Men out of a sense that it isn't for me. (But love Succession).
Mad Men is my favorite drama all time. It’s a show that is a hard sell in that the anti-hero is an ad man with a secret instead of a Mob Boss, or a Meth Kingpin. If creates a piece of historical fiction that rivals the best novels and it does so with such staggering attention to detail. I envy your opportunity to get to enjoy this show for the first time and hope you give it shot as I imagine it’s something you will likely love.

Actually, post-apocalyptic fiction reached its peak in 1974, with Sean Connery-

I can’t believe we’re already this far into the game. And how quickly they’ve established the very complex relationship between Joel and Ellie. I, too, wish we spent more time on mundane tasks

The cast is impecable and I believe the relationships based on their abilities, despite how quickly the show is covering the events of the game.

Started watching Wolf Pack on Paramount + and so far so good. After watching the first 3 episodes I'm looking forward to next weeks new episode.

I’m on season five of The Sopranos and even though I do have quite a bit left overall, I am still lamenting finishing it soon. I’m enjoying the hell out of it. I realize it is weirdly similar to Mad Men (and I know Matthew Weiner wrote on it before MM). But the way scenes are structured and the use of a lot of subtext crops up in very similar ways to MM.

it is excellent to rewatch too. After you understand the characters you don’t have to use as much focus trying to figure out relationship dynamics and start to notice more of the nuanced subtleties that the show nails but details that are easily overlooked when you’re trying to figure out who everyone is.
I just finished season four in this book, and I'm loving it. It's a great way to revisit the series without a re-watch. (I've watched it at least three times through) Although it definitely has me wanting to go back and watch some singular episodes.

I hadn't had time to stay caught up on Last of Us and just finished episode 3. I can't think of the last time I've been that emotionally wrecked. Almost couldn't make it through it with my wife and I sitting next to each other just crying through most of it. It was beautiful and so incredibly painful. I'm hurting on the inside now.

it took me like 2 hours to recover from the most recent last of us

my heart did not stop pounding. i was not prepared for THE HOLE. i’d been waiting for a sinkhole to do something because they kind of hinted at one earlier, but jesus christ.

also - a BLOATER?? i only know this term because i watched the “inside the episode” after. i’m sure a lot is recognizable to those who have played the game. but it is all new for me. i also appreciated the “inside the ep” explainer on clickers. for some reason i just thought that was their final form after 20 years, or something.
I thought the Frank and Bill episode was an emotional one, but this hit me different. When Elle tried to save Sam with her blood, I really wished it would work. It was heartbreaking the way it ended.

Episode 5 wrecked me emotionally. So yeah, it doesn’t stop with this show.

My wife and I have been loving Poker Face. One thought I had about the episode structure is that the way each episode
starts with the crime and the victim for a good 10-15 minutes is kind of like Texas Hold Em, where most of the cards are placed face up on the table, then Charlie comes along and we have to see her get the last couple cards to put it together. It also serves to help make the victim more than just some random nobody, especially in the ones where she spends a good amount of time with them.
I love that it turns out that Charlie was always tangentially involved in the situation but they essentially cut around her. And yeah, it really goes a long way to make the central crimes compelling on their own merits.
