Television

I finished my re-watch of Mad Men a few days ago. Still love this show to death.

But now I am stuck as to what to binge next. I so enjoyed the journey of The Sopranos and then Mad Men, so anything I can think of to follow up just feels like it won't satisfy the same way. I started Halt And Catch Fire and the pilot was just okay. I know it gets better as it goes, but I'm a little meh on going back and waiting for it to get good. I still have never watched The Wire, though I've tried about three different times. It just didn't hook me a few episodes in. But maybe I should try yet again...idk.
The Wire is excellent but it’s not a show that give the viewers any grace when starting off it takes almost the whole first season to figure out who’s who and how things work but once it clicks it makes for compelling TV. I rewatched during the pandemic and loved it even more since I knew how things worked going in.

The nice thing is, if you end up enjoying The Wire, it will open up A lot of other excellent David Simon led shows; Treme, Show Me A Hero, The Deuce, We Own This City, Homicide, etc…
All are varying degrees of fantastic.

Other worthy recommendations: Deadwood, Justified, Band Of Brothers, and/or The Leftovers.

As someone who adored the first season, and considers it maybe one of my favorite season of tv ever, season 3 of Ted Lasso is not it. It's a mess, and no clue how they can end it satisfactorily in 7 more episodes.

It's not bad but I'm not enjoying the longer episode lengths. Also, I'll be surprised if this is actually the final season.

With Ted and Rebecca getting together, according to the weirdest shippers I’ve seen online (seriously it seems like a popular outcome; am I the only one who sees zero hints towards it?)

Overall yeah, the show has evolved away from what I find most charming and enjoyable about it. It used to be well balanced between comedy and drama and has gotten too self serious about the stakes of the drama.
Almost every ship in this show since season 2 has been a bizarre choice. What is tbe obsession this show has for characters getting together with their bosses.

The episode length is another issue I have. It's either a slog or too much of a good thing. Also Jason Sudeikis has seemingly said it's the final season, even if it's not being advertised as such on Apple TV. Very bizarre. I hope it is in any case.

All they've said is that they had a three season idea from the start but even at the beginning of this season they wouldn't flat out say this is the final season, so we'll see. It's probably Apple's most popular show. I don't see it going anywhere.

I still like watching Ted Lasso but it does feel a little shapeless at points in this new season. And with the Rebecca arc right now…it just seems lazy and dumb. There are other characters and aspects of the show I enjoy, but it feels less tight and quick than it did before. Season 2 holds up better binging than it did week to week. I’m wondering if this season would be the same.

Succession and Barry 👍👍👍👍

I appreciate how dark Barry became last season, and this season looks to continue in that tone but with also really funny stuff in the midst of it all. Succession similarly mines so much comedy in how the dialogue shakes out. I was just mesmerized by the fast writing on the recent episode and how frequently I laughed.

Plenty of sitcoms get away with the same dynamic but I often find myself thinking the working conditions at Richmond FC are troublingly unprofessional and incestuous.
I also find myself distracted by how blurry the CGI is when they film the actual matches in the stadiums full of thousands of people. I vaguely remember them making a big deal about securing that licensing deal with the premier league, but I don't really feel like that adds anything of value to the show and it feels like their efforts to capitalize on that deal just end up backfiring.

If you want something fun and kind of silly but also kind of awesome, I highly recommend the first two seasons of Alias (especially if you're a fan of either Jennifer Garner or Bradley Cooper).

Oh yeah I have seen most of Alias a long time ago. I remember enjoying it quite a bit. But there was some season where it jumped ahead in time or something? I don’t think I watched past that point. But I remember it doing something similar to Fringe in that it had a case of the week structure while also building a larger mythology, which I love.

Started The Diplomat on Netflix last night. Maybe I'm out of the loop but I'd not even heard of this one coming on, but it was front and center when browsing around. And what do you know, it's heckin excellent. Really quality and fast paced and interesting.

And Keri Russel is a national treasure.

TNG
Enterprise (I know, I know, but Commander Trip carried it)
DS9
Voyager
TOS (It wasn't my first, so it's originality doesn't carry a lot of weight with me)
Picard (disappointment)
Discovery (hot garbage)
Just finished picard season 3 and this was just pure fan service. the whole plot was simply a vehicle for bringing the tng crew back together on the enterprise
