Television

Netflix made the announcement during upfront a few weeks ago that they plan on “finishing the story” but were fairly ambiguous about what that would entail. I don’t think the higher ups were happy with the results (or viewing numbers) either. I am curious how they decide to proceed. I know Beneoff and Wise will still be involved but I doubt they get a blank check this time. Also, if they just get a single season to complete the story or maybe a series of movies? I will probably watch it because sometimes I just want something on the TV it’s not something that I am necessarily excited about.
Benioff and Weiss came out later and said they’ll have all the time they need, which, based on the novels, is probably three more seasons at a minimum. But we’ll see.

@Mather I can’t say I agree with you overall, but I did come into it with an understanding of the overall plot. I think where the series suffers is not in the quality of the adaptation, but in the very short length of the season. The book is dense as hell (the Chinese adaptation that came out last year is like 30 episodes for the first novel), and to compress it into 8 episodes while having to make all the requisite adjustments for the format, the localization, etc inherently required a lot of elision. I feel like it was handled about as well as it could have been within those limitations, but I also recognize your complaints (and agree that Eiza Gonzalez was woefully miscast).

I haven’t watched yet, but this description makes it sound like a pretty faithful adaptation. The novels use people mainly as a vehicle to break down complex principles of physics via dialogue, and it’s exactly as stilted on the page as you describe it on the screen. What the books have going for them, and what presumably makes this especially hard to turn into compelling tv, is that the books have accompanying narration and (limited) character interiority that isn’t conveyed through speech. In fact sometimes the characters act in ways that seem to contradict their own motivations precisely because they’re trying to out-maneuver someone else, and it’s not always stated explicitly, but you have more clues to help you connect those dots as a reader than it sounds like you do as a viewer.

Anyway — doesn’t make it good tv in its own right, but your description doesn’t surprise me.
I'll definitely be interested to hear your thoughts after you've seen it...

I have not read the books but I've heard they're well done and I know that this was heavily adapted with the setting changing from China to London and the main character being split into five characters among other things.

But not having read the books and watching this show, I'm just astonished this was the final result. Caveat that these are just my opinions, I don't want to ruin it for anyone so I really wasn't going to get into it. So stop reading if you liked it or haven't watched it yet... HOWEVER, since y'all want to know... The script seems to have been written by an algorithm or at the very least someone with a very tenuous grip on the English language. Either that or it was so heavily edited in order to make it fit into 8 episodes that it borders on unintelligible. The characters do not speak like actual humans, they jump in and out of topics, emotions, motivations at the drop of a hat with almost zero connecting fibres between them. They're all almost completely one dimensional save for the main antagonist who at least has enough screen time and back story to give us a small amount of insight into their motivations (Dr Wenjie). And this makes sense because from my understanding she's the one main character who was taken wholesale from the book. The gaggle of scientists created for the show are paper thin and completely forgettable from to scene.
The rules for the universe that are created within the show are ignored almost immediately within the same scene in order to further the plot, completely ignoring that they just got through explaining that none of the actions they are currently taking make one iota of sense or should even be possible considering the rules they just established. It's a very simple story that's presented within the show and yet they're incapable of progressing the plot without tripping over their own plot devices.

I feel sorry for the actors because most of them come off horribly which really isn't their fault as they had almost nothing to work with script wise. But some of the performances are just terrible, the lead scientist probably coming off the worst (Gonzalez) but aside from Wong, Bradley and Chao the rest of the mains are pretty painful, but again, a lot of that is scripting.

I'm not going to waste any more time on it but I'm stunned after all that money this is what they came up with. Especially when from watching it it's hard to actually see where most of this money went.
For me, the more it progressed the weaker it got. I feel like they crammed far too much into the 8 episodes, especially with all the different characters they have in play. I really liked Benedict Wong's character and would have loved to see more of him, but the others seemed quite forgettable to me and I didnt really build an attachment to them.

Finally finished Ripley last night. Great show, looked gorgeous too. I can't rate it as high as Shogun, as far as recently watched shows, but it was a really enjoyable and sometimes squirmy watch.
Personally, I felt Shogun went down a notch the last couple of episodes. Still a great series and in my top 5 for the year but Ripley is firmly my #1 show. At least until the Bear S3!

I am nervous that they are doing additional seasons of Shogun. While they didn’t follow the book exactly, additional seasons will be brand new territory. It was such a perfect single season story arc. But greed rears its head again.

They are doing more Shogun? Not sure I like that idea either...
Handmaid's Tale and Game of Thrones went off a cliff when they passed the source material. I am not confident.

Just wrapped up the Disney+ Beach Boys doc and it’s done really well. Nothing groundbreaking for those that are fairly familiar with the band and I wish they spent more time on the post-Pet Sounds era but they got lots of quality interview clips and it’s fun to hear their take on things. They even managed to keep Mike Love from looking like the giant asshole he is. I’d be excellent primer for anyone looking to dive into The Beach Boys catalog for the first time.
