Television

Speaking of funny, I finally started Hacks and am glad I did. Two episodes in and I'm loving it. I initially wrote it off, assumed it was a stale premise but the cast is fantastic. Writing is solid so far too.

Exact same boat. Watched the 2nd episode last night and enjoying is so far
It just gets better and better - enjoy!

The Bear, man. Such a good show. I watched episodes 1 and 2 of the new season last night, then rewatched them this morning.
Agreed. I loved the differing methods of telling the story in episode 1. I've felt that the Bear is a love letter to Chicago. The 1st episode felt like a love letter to food. Episode 2 puts us right back in the action. Very excited to watch this play out.

Watched the first ep last night; it was excellent. I did find myself wondering at how the show's evolved; the tonal difference between this episode and the pilot with the Ballbreaker machine is quite a gulf.

I see it's already been discussed but watched ep 1 of the bear season 3....what an oddly done episode (in a good way). It was very light on story on the surface but definitely did a lot of lightening of the shadows from the past and creating a foundation for the coming season. I don't think I've seen an episode of television delivered in quite that way. Maybe there is but it felt fresh and its own thing. Cool episode.

I just watched it, and it was like a beautiful, artsy version of the Community clip episode that's almost all clips from "past episodes" we never actually saw (fitting, since Joel McHale came back for it).

Also, I keep having to process stuff about my own dysfunctional family and upbringing while watching this show. The way little bad moments are floating up to surface for him, not as full flashbacks but more like intrusive thoughts, hits a little too close to home. "Fishes" from last season had way too many little moments that I could relate to directly...

Haven’t seen it but The showrunner Chris Storer is a big fan of Community and is Gillian Jacobs significant other.

The music was by Trent Reznor / Atticus Ross! So good.

Some friends of mine absolutely HATED the Fishes episode. For me, it was mind blowing as it hit me so hard from multiple perspectives - as a child, and also as a parent / holiday host who does not let anyone else help cook, but I want perfection. (No, I'm not as crazy as DD 😂 )

My single mother is basically a slightly more tempered version of Donna. For Good & Bad, I find the family dynamic on The Bear infinitely relatable.

I've seen lots of mixed section to the Bear S3. Here are My spoiler free rankings/thoughts:

If I had to assign letter grades to the seasons it would be S1 = A-, S2 = A, S3 = B.

I still really enjoyed it but thought they got a bit cute at times with the cameos/stunt casting and some of the repeat music cues.
I have only watched the first 2 eps for this season. I like to leave a few days between each viewing to savour the episodes because I think they are so well done. When ep 2 ended, I thought that it had only been about 10 minutes (plus the Eddie Vedder intro montage) but was 26min total, which to me is the sign of a good episode.

I really wanted to spread out my viewing of the episodes but I was starting to see little spoilers popping up all over the place so just powered through them. I will definitely rewatch after my vacation.

I still have a couple episodes left but have enjoyed season 3 a great deal.

I think a bit of a blowback is expected after the immense hype for season three following season one, which came out of nowhere to become a surprise hit, and season two, that exceeded expectations proving season one was not a fluke.

I don’t know if there is more stunt casting to come beyond Sammy Fak and Tiffs fiancé, Frank but I genuinely enjoyed both. Especially Sammy given the nature of the Fak clan on this show he is just there to provide a bit of levity and comic relief and doesn’t detract to from anything. Frank’s actor might overshadow the scene a bit but given that Frank is being shown as an ideal man (in contrast to Richie) the actor makes sense in that regard.

Again I have a couple episodes left but I doubt anything left will top The first episode, the Tina episode, or “Ice Chips” and I think that is a big part or some of the disappointment, the best episodes this season were fairly siloed. This season they are leaning in to character study and that works well but when there is only 10 episodes total and a third of them are siloing off cast members we don’t get as much focus on the full larger story.

My hope is, since season 3 and Season 4 were filmed back-to-back, that when season 4 is released that they are more taken as season 3A and season 3B and once the full story is completed much of the quibbles of season 3 will be forgotten.

The Bear season 3 is still some of the best TV being made today and love being around these people in this world… Even with all shouting.
