Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger

A first time, pleasant listen. Only recognized "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" from the initial runthrough. Some of the phrasing in the lyrics ("screamed like a panther in the night," etc.) is amusing. The combination of solid guitar playing and generally enjoyable tracks makes this a worthwhile listen. Willie's voice is palpably poignant and sentimental.
With that said, the country legend's music still doesn't motivate me to further engage interest in outlaw/classic era country music willingly.

Personal highlights: "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," "Can I Sleep in Your Arms"

I mean, Willie wasn't really outlaw. He was just kind of unclassifiable and did things his own way.

At this point, I kind of think, if you were somehow associated with Waylon in the 70's you get tagged as outlaw.

Also, country isn't for everyone. I have a very complicated history with it myself. I'm very glad the genre has opened up a bit in the last few years, especially in regards to inclusion.
 
RHS gets better on repeated listening. So many 10/10 tracks on there. Best country album ever for my money.

I went through the whole 1001 albums book back in 2019 listening to album by album in order. Took me from January until late November but it was a great experience. So many new favorites discovered that year. I'm at the point now where I'm collecting as many as I can on vinyl. I'm enjoying reading everyone's thoughts on albums they're listening to for the first time in this thread.

Did you get that it was a concept album? I didn’t get that initially when I first listened but once I came to that realization it heightened my appreciation or the album as a whole. It’s definitely only an “Outlaw Country” album within the context lyrically. Musically, Red Headed Stranger does’t feel like a contemporary album, the album’s instrumentation and the callback to more traditional Western swing style music gives the whole album an air of timelessness. It feels like it could have come out in the 1870s just as easily as the 1970s.

It’s one of my favorite albums of all time.

I have a yoyo relationship with Randy Newman's music. I tend to either love it or hate it depending on my mood. This album has always been my favorite though and I don't think I've ever not enjoyed listening to it. I'd never heard the bonus tracks so happy to listen to this version to add something new to it for me. The simplicity of the song structures and the narrative lyrics/singing style comes together on this one so well. Opting for the piano, but not moving in the pop/soft rock direction, makes Randy stand out among his peers. His voice is unique, almost goofy at times, giving it a light-heartedness that is the polar opposite of what someone like Dylan does with his serious gravel, for example. Newman is also the master of the everyday. There's nothing epic or world historical in his lyrics, but they still transport the listener.

listening to this today it's hard to ignore the influence that it would have over the next several years. it's a record with a schizophrenic and loud blend of genres that spawned major lazer and sleigh bells, so it's definitely a bit ahead of its time. for my tastes, though, it's one of those albums i can listen to and genuinely appreciate what it's putting out there, but only once before putting it away for awhile- it is not a record i'm compelled to spend repeated time with.

Time to give this one another shot. Currently my least favourite OutKast album, but features one of my favourite OutKast songs - go figure!

But I'll be doing this tomorrow, tonight it's jazz streams and a book until my eyes close.

Yeah, I still don't love it.
There are some brilliant moments for sure, but it feels forced with none of the magic of their first three or the audacity of Idlewild. At least Speakerboxxx/The Love Below outright owned the schism. "B.O.B." and "Gasoline Dreams" are absolute bangers though! And the reason I give it a 3 instead of a 2.5.
 
this is the soundtrack to some 50's movie about bicycles with subtitles that is in some dark corner of the TCM section of HBO MAX

He's an okay singer, I guess. It might be better if I had a clue what he was singing about and if there weren't weird triangle rhythm sections.

I feel like I need a beret and a cigarette in a long holder thing and that I should spit on filthy Americans like me. SOMEONE GET ME A CROISSANT!!
