Should we do a group project

Motörhead is a bit like the Rolling Stones in that I'm pretty familiar with the band themselves but haven't really dug deep into any of their albums. However, I'm glad to report that Ace of Spades kicks ass. Admittedly it can start to feel a bit samey by the end but that's only because it's 36 minutes straight of driving riffs, punchy percussion and sneakily catchy hooks. No time wasted on long-winded instrumental detours or shitty ballads, just straightforward adrenaline. The first half is a bit stronger, especially the initial run from the classic title track to Shoot You in the Back, though there's not really a song I dislike. With the exception of Jailbait, which is sonically fine but about a topic that not even Lemmy can sound cool singing about (I suppose you can argue the narrator isn't supposed to be a particularly good guy but it's still a bit ehhh). Overall it's a great listen from start to finish and one I'm sure I'll be revisiting soon.

Ramones - Ramones

as demonstrated by my ill fated punk thread, I am not the most versed in Punk, but there are some things I absolutely love, one being this!!! 5/5

Nirvana - Nevermind

Not much to say. This album did more than kickstart a whole genre, it provided a voice for a generation. Outside of the particularly mediocre "Territorial Pissings," it holds up superbly.

Personal highlights: "Come as You Are," "Lithium," "Something in the Way"
Rating: 4.5/5 [Outstanding]

I wonder at what point in the future "grunge" will be removed from the canon as a genre. Could maybe make an argument for it being a movement.
I never considered it as a genre outright. I think is a Subgenre or a style of Alternative/Underground/Indie Rock. It is like Gangsta Rap. It’s a popular accepted subgenre that was created by the music media. Neither has many definable qualities.

Gangsta rap might be easier to define... I mean to me, gangsta rap is about gangbanging, lol. Grunge is this weird catchall phrase for punk, metal, and basic classic rock that came from Seatle or was otherwise influenced by that scene in the early 1990's.

I mean, what makes a group grunge? Almost all of the bands easily fit into a different genre which is why I asked the question.

It's a sound, but also a time and place. Like "classic rock," "arena rock", "yacht rock", or most any genre, it's not a simple definition but it's definitely a thing and a sound. And I think everyone agrees on certain bands as being grunge, and some as being keystones in the movement.

I mean it’s not though. Pearl Jam doesn’t sound like Nirvana doesn’t sound like Alice In Chains, etc…. I mean AIC and Soundgarden are the closest. They are really just metal bands.
