I'll also be the brave one to say that I actually like Rod Stewart. I really only don't want him doing Standards though. That crap is AWFUL. I even like his Downtown Train - hell, it's the reason I got into Waits anyhow.
I agree for the most part. I dig his raspy vocals but he’s not much of a songwriter so he needs to have good material for it to work. The past 20+ years he’s been doing schlocky standards. I think he should work with Rick Rubin on an American-esque type comeback record but I don’t think he really gives a fuck. I even enjoy his super 80s Young Turks album in the same way I dig Don Henley or Phil Collins 80s era tunes.

R.E.M. - Automatic For the People

Listened to this one before, but it has been several years. The three songs to ignite and close the album are equally strong, including "Drive" as a stellar, ominous opener. Of course, "Everybody Hurts" is an important one for compilations of unfortunate instances and for meme circles, as well as being a neat ballad outright.
I will say that there is a drop in quality in the middle section of this album spanning from "Sweetness Follows" to "Star Me Kitten" even though the songs are passable. Perhaps you could argue that the aforementioned drop starts as early as "Everybody Hurts" depending on your stance, though I enjoy it myself. The highlights are shining stars.
Totally understand of how this could be viewed as R.E.M.'s best.

Personal highlights: "Drive," "Man on the Moon," "Nightswimming"
Rating: 4/5 [Excellent]

Don't fight it, baby, feel it. Absolutely love this show. I mean, godamn, Sam Cooke was one of a kind. I hope everyone loves this as much as I do when it pops up in their journey. This is also why I love and collect live shows. The energy when they're recorded right is just infectious. 5/5

Today's one is a bit spooky for me as an hour before I got it, I placed a "make an offer" on the 10 LP box of it. And just now it was accepted. A full 45% below where it was originally listed, and well below the Cogs median. So well chuffed. Not intending therefore to listen to this today, but an obvious 5/5.

i hate to admit that i've never really given gang starr much attention, and i don't think i've listened to this album (or any) in whole at all. it's not for a lack of interest, it just never happened for whatever reason. guru's jazzmatazz was a late night college staple, even, so i don't really have a good excuse other than i just never got around to it. so, seeing this album pop up today was a welcome surprise. what is not a surprise is that it's just so good. a song like who's gonna take the weight is the type of hip-hop sound i gravitate to in general and this record is that song and more. favorite lyric i picked up on during my couple listens came at the end, "we use sheer guts to open the earducts of your brain to expose every vein," which is one of many lines telling the listener what their purpose as gang starr is. good shit. i'm gonna have to pick this up, better late than never.

Talking Heads - Remain in Light

An all timer. A dense, energetic, and witty record packed with personality.
So many ways to approach this record from a listening standpoint; almost all of the songs have a polyrhythmic composition, with the only song that doesn't being the lumbering closer "The Overload," which still has the band enacting their take on Joy Division's cold and bassy structures. "The Great Curve" is almost sensory overload...there's so much going on by the final minute that it is perplexing how the onslaught of rhythms courses through you and yet functions cohesively. And with this being from the mind of David Byrne, you can expect a plethora of innovative, clever, and groovy musical/lyrical passages on the entire record.
Perfection.

Personal highlights: all of it
Rating: 5/5 [Masterpiece]
