Confession time, I’ve never listened to this album, I know Back to Black like the back of my hand but never gave this a listen.
This is good. Dap Kings make everything better, so it’s not as good as Back to Black. I do really like her voice and she does interesting things with scales. The thematic elements don’t sound as out of place with more modern RnB sound but it is still a retro sound in its totality which still makes her point of view unique in them. 4 stars

My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything

220px-MyBloodyValentineIsntAnything.jpg

All time for many, just shy for me. There's a palpable difference in energy here compared to their seminal follow-up Loveless; the post-punk and no-wave influences are clear as day.
I flat-out don't enjoy "Sueisfine." The songs don't venture past 4min except once, which matters to me when the layering of guitars evokes a dreamlike atmosphere for one to reside in. But ultimately, these are minor nitpicks.
Still near-perfection.

Personal highlights: "Lose My Breath," "Feed Me With Your Kiss," "You Never Should," "I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It)" but man it's a beautiful sonic journey
Rating: 4.5/5 [Outstanding]

I will very likely get a copy...when the time is right.

Day 42 - (I've lost track again, honestly)

Day 0042.jpeg

For some reason I found myself reluctant to finally listen to this one, but I don't really know why. Could have been life stuff and a busy new release week, I guess. Either way, I did finally listen to it and very much enjoyed it. First time listening to anything by Elbow, though I'm sure I've probably heard a song or two along the way without realizing it. "Grounds for Divorce" was my favourite song on the first pass, but I really enjoyed the whole album quite a bit and am sure further listens will only increase that enjoyment. I'd say on first listen this was a 3.5/5 for me but will round up to 4 on the site as I'm pretty sure further listens will drive my rating up.

I've never listened to any of the bonus stuff on the deluxe edition, so that'll be my goal today.

Edit: Close to the Edge is still one of the best prog songs. Side B isn't as strong because it doesn't work as a cohesive whole for the album, which is what I prefer with my prog. But Jon Anderson is at his peak vocals here, and side B doesn't have bad songs. Listening to the deluxe version with the bonus tracks made the songs on side B fit a little better because it made it sound more like a compilation album. Title track is 5/5, but with the lack of unity on side B it brings the album down a tad to a 4/5.

Day 43 (was a few days ago now)

This is actually my first time listening to this one. Two songs in and I'm really digging it so far. Kinda hate the cover though!

Goofy cover aside, this is a great album. Quite a statement after a decade off from releasing albums and out of the public eye. I'm looking forward to more time with this one. 4/5

Day 45 (rpm - although, that would make this a 2LP)

I've never really been much of a fan of The Who but I had a Pearl Jam bootleg back in high school with a cover of "Baba O'Riley" on it. A couple of years later this album came up in a 3 CDs for $10, or some such, deal so I picked it up and actually listened to it quite a lot in my early twenties. It's a very solid album. "The Song is Over" and "Behind Blue Eyes" are both songs I find myself humming inside my head at random moments through the years, but I don't necessarily seek them out. "Baba O'Riley" still rips and always will!

It was nice to revisit this album again. I could definitely see myself grabbing this from a bargain bin or a PIF thread, but I don't know that I'd go too far out of my way to add it to the shelf, despite being a great album. 4/5

Day 46

I recognize the band name. Oh! And I recognize the first song!! The second song reminds me of the first song. The third song really reminds me of the first song. The fourth song sounds familiar, I think I've heard this one before too. It also reminds me of the first song. Song five sounds different - definitely the same band. The back half of the album feels a little more varied while also feeling very cohesive in its sound. The instrumental jam to shut things down at the end is quite a nice touch. I actually enjoyed this one quite a bit, but don't know how much I'd feel called toward frequent listens. 3.5/5, round down.
