Jealous.

Dinosaur Jr. is one of those bands I wish I could relive discovering.

You're in for a blast.
Same. Throughout their 3 distinct periods they managed to maintain excellence giving them a consistently brilliant run of albums. J Mascis’ guitar is so distinct that once you get familiar with it you hear it everywhere the man is prolific. The Our Band Could Be Your Live chapter is excellent and the 33 1/3 is quite good also and the rabbit hole runs deeper still; with J’s solo albums that are super underrated and Lou Barlow’s Sebadoh, his solo stuff and his stuff with The Folk Implosion. So much good stuff.

Well, there you go, we know I am gonna do a deep dive whenever I get there. If I can sit through however long that damn Nig-Heist bullshit was, I'm sure I can dig deep into J Mascis and friends.

For what it's worth, really enjoying this album tonight. Look forward to the fun that awaits me in that chapter. And whatever year I get to the 33 1/3. I'm almost done with Joy Division and the Prince and Velvet Underground books are supposed to land tomorrow.

I just got David Bowie’s Low 33 1/3 as a Valentine’s Day gift but haven’t cracked it open yet.

Just Like Heaven started and I was like, wait I know this song, wait this is the Cure, what the fuck spotify. Oh, okay. Also, love any band willing to cover my hands down favorite Cure song. If I wasn't at work, I'd be spinning around the room like a fucking lunatic.

I've really enjoyed the Joy Division book and love the band and their music, just (believe it or not given work woes) I haven't really been in a head space to listen to them. Black Flag has actually been perfect for the drive home every morning.

The segue into The Future by Leonard Cohen was very unsettling just now....

Here's a Dino Jr. video I shot 14 years ago that someone has uploaded to YouTube. Nice show at The Neighborhood Theatre in Charlotte, NC. Nothing Oscar worthy - just a drunk guy in the balcony trying to give you a stable shot and zooming in when the spirit moves. Pretty unique show as DJ blew the power to the place except for the stage resulting in J Mascis soloing in the darkness for a few minutes. A literal 'Lights Out' solo. Sublime...

The Cure cover is quit good.

I couldn’t find it on Spotify but Dinosaur Jr. do an absolute shit take cover of Neil Young’s “Lotta Love”

As terrible as that is It’s included on the really awesome late 80s Neil Young tribute comp that features great NY covers that you can pick up fairly cheaply on Discogs.

Todd Rundgren -
Something/Anything?

First time listening. What am I missing here? I recognize "Hello It's Me" and that's it. This is an almost 90min slog of humdrum 70s pop rock with one uninteresting song after another. A half-day after listening, I can't say I recall a single melody, lyric, or chorus outside of the aforementioned "Hello It's Me." Perfectly fine and inoffensive background music, kind of like how the album artwork functions akin to your grandma's wallpaper.
Unless I hear something by Todd Rundgren that really blows me away, I'm skeptical about pursuing his works any further. Not a fan.

Personal highlights: "Hello It's Me"
Rating: 2/5 [Mediocre]

1989

i've listened to 1989 (ryan's version) many times but i've never actually listened to 1989 (taylor's version) until now. and while i may never listen to the former ever again, i don't see my listening count of the latter ever surpassing the former. admittedly, shake it off and bad blood are earworms that i found popping in my head throughout the day after listening through for the first time last night, but i think they are a couple of the most well known songs from this record for a reason. 1989 (taylor's version) is not a bad record by any means, and has its moments, but it's just not quite in my wheelhouse of what i enjoy from a pop record, which usually starts with a strong, distinctive voice presence and i feel like taylor just doesn't really possess that or sing with any real palpable feeling, at least on this album.

once you get past three of the first four songs, this is basically a greatest hits record and represents everything you'd expect from creedence. i guess if you had to pick one studio record by the band to listen to this would be the one to go with. pretty solid classic rock all around, with only relatively straightforward covers of before you accuse me and ooby dooby (at tracks 2 and 4, respectively) not really adding anything to the overall quality of the record. of the eleven songs, only two go longer than 3 1/2 minutes, with both featuring extended but contained 'jams'- if there's one song on here i'd like to have seen get an extended treatment, it would have been run through the jungle.

Hot take time. I’ve long held that with the Eagles all you need is a greatest hits. I know some folks would claim you also need Hotel California. Whatever.

I am also of the opinion that all one needs of Morrison is the first album and LA Woman. I think they make a greatest hits irrelevant. The entire breadth of them is covered in those two records.

Maybe, I should have sought more from them when I was a kid. I find their music good enough. I’m not changing the channel on them ever.

Roadhouse Blies, Waiting for the Sun. Peace Frog. Ship of Fools are all the deep cuts warranted off of this. The rest is routine Morrison and company. It’s not bad but it’s not essential. If it were my list, wouldn’t be here.

3 stars

I suppose it's time for a weekly recap. I need to try and do better at posting as I listen.

Anyways, while jazz as a whole will probably always elude me, even my ignorant ears can recognize A Love Supreme as an impressive work in the genre. At first I sort of wrote it off as not being my thing but it really opened up for me on repeated listens. Magnificent performances from all the players involved and just enough variety in the compositions to keep my interest from waning too much. I gave it a 4. It's not something I'd want to put on very often, but I have to acknowledge the talent that went into it.
