@avecigrec presents SCOWL

I get that there is some intense history to this, but I found it an irritating listen. It actually knocked my Grump-O-Meter from standard surly to amplified.

I won't begrudge others their enjoyment of this, but I found very little myself. 1/5

Yeah, sorry @TenderLovingKiller® I figured you weren't gonna like my thoughts on this one. 🫣

This is just too grumpy. Lol. I can get why people don't like this version. I'm actually surprised it is as beloved as it is. I love Mr. Wilson and he has done very little wrong to me. I find this an interesting take on finishing what should have been his magnum opus.

Do you enjoy Pet Sounds? If the answer is yes, before you write it off this project completely I implore you to give the SMiLE Sessions a listen. I personally find the Smile Session to be quite a bit better than Brian Wilson’s Smile (though I do enjoy Brian’s version also). Smile Sessions is compiled from the original tapes whereas Brian Wilson’s Smile is completely re-recorded.

i'm tryin', i'm tryin', i'm tryin', i'm tryin', i'm tryin', i'm tryin', i'm tryin', i'm tryin', i'm tryin', i'm tryin', i'm tryin' to get into this (yet again) and frankly pavement has just never struck a chord with me. it's fine, i don't hate it, and i guess if i am going to listen to a pavement record there's a pretty good chance i'd pick this one, but i'd be thinking about what i'd want to listen to next while doing so, like maybe the smashing pumpkins. ; )

I don't understand what what you mean and I could really give a fuck.

To be honest, it's been a hot minute since I've given it a go. I imagine this project will remedy that.
I don't remember loving it to the degree so many do, but I also don't remember it actively annoying me.
The Beach Boys initially to my were oldies, guest stars on Full House, and motherfucking “Kokomo”, basically the furthest thing from cool possibly ever. The first time I appreciated The Beach Boys was via “God Only knows” inclusion of the Boogie Nights soundtrack. around that time I saw the Behind The Music about the band and holy shit was their story and music way more in depth than I was ever aware of also around that time it was like the 30th anniversary reissue of Pet Sounds and it was being reviewed everywhere so I gave it a go but it initially didn’t do much for me. I enjoyed the 3 songs I was familiar with “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”, “Sloop John B”, and “God Inly Knows” but the album as a whole left be a bit cold. Still something about the album kept drawing me back and I found myself listened to it more and more over the following year until one day all the piece fell into place. Probably one of the reasons I love it so much still is because it wasn’t love at first listen. It took a year of intrigue and fascination for fall in love with the album. Anyways, I am not saying you should try to force yourself to like it or there is anything wrong if you don’t love. I just wanted to provide a testimonial that maybe you didn’t love it or were indifferent the first time but maybe something else clicks with you this time.

That all being said. Pet Sounds is a more reserved and focused album than SMiLE but if you can’t fin any joy in SMiLE I wouldn’t suspect Pet Sounds will be your jam either.

last.fm says this is the second song I have ever listened to by Neneh Cherry,,, so if I have listened to this is was prior to 6 years ago, I know Buffalo Stance had a certain ubiquitousness back in the day. It certainly is something I like the groove of and even dig the inelegant synths.

Funny, because I just put Out of Blue in the Circle Jerks RIYL, but Kisses on the Wind has a real Debbie Gibson vibe to it.

Yeah, I am more familiar with her pop, Don and her brother, Eagle-Eye than I am Neneh.

I'm all caught up in my listening, but have been too exhausted to post much, but here's what I had:

I probably would have been into this if I've heard it years ago, but it didn't do a whole lot for me. I have several other 70s rock/glam rock I'm familiar with that I'd reach for if I wanted to. And I didn't like the Janis Joplin cover. 2/5

This felt too new to be here, and wasn't sure how it would hold up, but damn it's actually been 6 years?! It did still hold up for me, and I enjoyed playing this a few times from doing this after not hearing it for awhile. 4/5

Fucking love this album. 5/5

More Sonic Youth next!

is Eagle Eye really her brother? I'm too lazy to google.

I'm digging this. It reminds me of Was Not Was, Terence Trent D'Arby and Graffiti Bridge era Prince. It's right on the cusp of New Jack Swingish, but its own thing. It's kind of hard to explain because in a lot of ways it's its own thing. Kind of like a R&B/Hip Hop Edie Brickell. It's right up my alley. Wish I had spent time with it back in the day. Should definitely pick up some vinyl if its remotely affordable... afraid to look.

hey look @TenderLovingKiller® wasn't kidding. weird. I'm not sure I know any Eagle-Eye Cherry songs. I think i may have had him confused with Buckcherry.
