Another winner over here tonight. Need to pick up a copy of this on Vinyl one day:

Buena Vista Social Club

Pretty sure this was my introduction to Cuban music. A beautiful album and great film. One day I should explore more of Cooder's music, I really only know things that he worked on others with and I love all of them.

Day 65

Another one I've never even heard of! Fun.

Right out the gate it doesn't sound like anything I expected at all. While associated with the punk scene the power pop and psychedelia elements are definitely much more prevalent so far. I'm pretty into this.

I wonder if Gordon Gano was a fan of these guys. The vocals on "Breaking Down" definitely remind me of Violent Femmes. "City of Fun" too - which also feels the most punk anything has sounded thus far on the album as well. Oh yeah, the bit of freakout at the end of "City of Fun" also reminds me of the Femmes. These guys must be an influence.

"I love my mother but I wouldn't wanna have sex with her!" = gold.

The more I hear the more I'm convinced the Femmes are deeply influenced by these guys.

Alright, I know I'll be listening to this one a bunch more - it's jumping up on the want-to-buy list now. This is fuggin' awesome!

A couple of songs in I figured this was a strong 4, but I'd say it's a 4.5+ likely to hit 5 with a few more listens.

The "global reviews" average for this one is disturbingly low.

Day 66

Day 0066.jpeg

This one I have heard of but had never listened to before tonight. I can definitely see how it's been an influential album for so many, but on a first listen it's definitely in "wouldn't turn it up but wouldn't turn it off" territory for me. I feel like I want to like this one more than I do, so I'll certainly give it another go or two, but for now it's just fine. 3/5

I'm not sure I had ever listened to Napalm Death before. I had certainly heard the name. This would have been a little heavy for 14 year old me. I dig it though. Hard to believe this is from 87 given more recent trends to sounds like this. I do understand that the second half is a different beast.

The album I am listening to this week from the other book is Mose Allison's Allison Wonderland which is a 2 hour 18 minute compilation. What in the flying hell? 47 songs. I like it, but it's all kind of the sameish. After an hour it's all starting to blur together unless there is a cover or something...

Alice Cooper -
Billion Dollar Babies
220px-Alice_Cooper_-_Billion_Dollar_Babies.jpg

First time listening. The singles were fine. Felt like a chore at times; songs like "Sick Things" drag for what seems like an eternity. Is this one of those "you had to be there" albums? It sounds dated and hokey too often.
Not a fan.

Personal highlights: "Billion Dollar Babies," "No More Mr. Nice Guy"
Rating: 2/5 [Mediocre]

Been away from the challenge for a while...behind by seven days. As you've probably seen, I've given my fair share of scores 2.5 or less, with almost certainly many more of these to come, especially with what I have seen in others' random selections.

Bayou Country

(bayou country - creedence clearwater revival)

my second ccr album in this project after cosmo's factory, this one is a little more exploratory and contains less covers and notably fewer classic rock staples- only proud mary and born on the bayou are instantly recognizable. there's also a ccr-ified version of good golly miss molly, which seems unnecessary on this album (this was the case for a few of the covers on cosmo's, too). this is only their second album, but their sound as we know it pretty much all there. of the two extended tracks on here, graveyard train just kind of plods along without going anywhere interesting, but keep on chooglin' is a pretty good album closer, though it feels like it could have been great if played with a bit more energy.
