So

Morrissey in general.
Never been anywhere near as big a Morrissey as a Smiths fan. Got into the Smiths around the turn of the millennium at 17 and loved it from the off. It’s remarkable that they released 4 studio albums in 5 years, countless non album singles and the only song I think isn’t good is Golden Lights, and it’s not bad bad either.
Didn’t find solo Morrissey until he had his first redemptive comeback in 04 with Irish Blood, English Heart and the album You Are The Quarry.
I really love that album and his debut Viva Hate (bar the one track that probably wasn’t viewed as being so problematic 35 years ago but in hindsight, and him being him, now definitely is). I’m not as familiar with this one, despite owning it and knowing it’s well regarded, beyond the singles.
His initial run of singles is outrageously strong, I think there are 6 or 7 straight that are just bang bang bang masterpieces. For that reasons I’d say the only real “essential” solo record is not a studio album, it’s Bona Drag being a collection of those singles, a good few of which were non album, and a few other bits from around then.
One thing I will say is that in his early solo phase he played with a sort of traditional and parochial English “end of the pier” humour and that lots of it is very tongue in cheek. I can see that it wouldn’t necessarily translate 100%. We have also, and particularly in the late 80s and early 90s, very different attitudes to humour and what is a ok to joke about than you guys necessarily do. I think it might come from, and I see this in reactions to certain debates now, a culture of individualism and individual rights your side of the ocean and perhaps a culture, that’s moving that way since Thatcher, but was traditionally more built around ideas that trended more towards community or collective rights. None of that is a reference to, or an excuse for, the far right stuff though!
As for “the jar”. Not 100% but I’m guessing it’s “on the booze”? Going for a few jars is one of the many many different ways of saying that you’re off drinking.
