The April 2023 Record Spin Challenge: "Want to go around again? I do."

April 7 - On this day in 2020, John Prine died of COVID. Play a country-folk/Americana album or an album that was specifically made as a pandemic album.

I'm cheating a little bit on my own prompt, but this one feels more in the spirit of it than the stoner metal pandemic album I was eyeing for today. I really love these David Grisman mandolin albums. You can find the Japanese pressings for cheap and they sound incredible.

If @Hemotep can bend the rules a bit I am gonna too. Obviously a Prine record on John Prine day seems like a pretty obvious choice but this live album was recorded in the late 1970s when John was making more straight ahead Rock & Roll than the the quieter singer/songwriter stuff he was more known for. It’s a fun slice of his career that is probably a bit overlooked.

Was going to spin this or possibly another Prine record. (But, I'm enjoying my Alice in Chains Dirt 30 box set at the moment)

Still thinking about what to spin for the challenge.

Maybe a bit of a cheat, not quite a pandemic album, but released in memory of John. (Produced during the pandemic, and I recall its release kept getting delayed)

TO OUR FRIENDS AND FANS,

For reasons better discussed in the history books, in the Spring of 2020 Gillian and I dusted off an old tape machine and did some home recording. Sometimes we bumped the microphone, sometimes the tape ran out, but in the end we captured performances of some songs we love. Five are first takes and five took a little more doing, but they all helped pass the time and held our interest in playback enough that we wanted to share them with you. We sincerely hope that you enjoy

ALL THE GOOD TIMES

– David & Gillian

William Tyler "Impossible Truth" - doesn't fit any of the parameters but feels like the perfect soundtrack to survive a pandemic so I'm going with it!

I thought too long about this one, but ended up on something cinematic by focusing on the soundtrack "life as a movie" idea.
