The April 2023 Record Spin Challenge: "Want to go around again? I do."

April 11 - Teenage Angst. Play an album that you listened to as a teenager that gave you the feels
This was a favorite of my sister's growing up, and it easily earned a spot in my faves too. Phil's vocal performance on Mama, and the whole band vibe on Home by the Sea...this still hits me.

Neat pick! I also listened to a ton of Phil Collins and 80's Genesis during my teens. Phil is a master at conveying emotions...

Day 10: April 10 - Be Kind To Your Inner Child. Play the album you would give to yourself as a child or that you want to share with your child.

The Simpsons - The Simpsons Sing The Blues

The Simpsons has been an institution in my lifetime and it goes all the way back to the beginning. I was on the verge for f turning 9 when “Do The Bartman” made its television premiere and I was very excited.

VA - The Beavis & Butt-Head Experience

I just on the precipice of becoming a teenager when this compilation dropped. My mom HATED Beavis & Butt-Head and forbade from watching (which made me wanna watch it more). Me and My best friend would walk around doing bad Beavis & Butt-Head impressions. I even secretly purchased this album on CD from my local K-Mart but after my mom discovered it she made me give it away to one of my friends with less stringent parents.

April 12 - First Loves. Play an album that you would want to be playing in the background if you could fall in love (even if unreciprocated) for the first time as a teenager all over again.

Portishead "Dummy" (1994 Go! Beat; 2017 reissue)
I was nerdy and unlucky as a teenager, but maybe if I had this to play things would have been different. What an enchanting record.

Damn, does the vinyl sound good too. The medium really suits these tracks.

Look at the stars... look how they shine for you....

I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard the song, Yellow. I was driving home from NYC after seeing U2 play on the roof of the MTV studios on Oct 30, 2000. "Yellow" came on K-Rock radio and I was entranced... waited for the dj to announce the title and artist, but no luck.

About 2 weeks later, I had M2 on (remember when MTV and MTV2, then known as M2 played videos!?) and suddenly I see this guy walking on a beach singing this song and I was like OMG - this is it! I bought the cd that day.

We saw Coldplay a lot in those early days, on this tour as well as the Rush of Blood to the Head. Our kids' first real concert was Coldplay on x&y tour, and that's when I lost interest. Last time we saw them, did not like anything released after.
But, I will always love this album.

More times than not when it comes to first love, this should be playing in the background as a preemptive warning...

Offspring - Smash

Parents of every junior high school student had caught wind of this CD and of its obscene contents. One kid brought it to be played on a boombox during PE and I vividly recall running laps around the gym when “Bad Habit” started playing and we knew we were all in trouble, as the worst swears are pretty much sung a cappella and thus very clearly heard by any PE teacher. We had to run more laps but the owner of the CD was deemed a god for being so bold.

Great pick for this prompt 🔥🔥🔥

One of those records that is just so uber-precious (I mean, look at that album cover!) but all the sap sounds really nice when you’re falling in love

Day 13: April 13 - First Heartbreak. Play an album that you would give to your heartbroken teenaged self after getting dumped/rejected.

The Beatles - Revolver

For me, I like to listen to comforting music when I am bummed out and Revolver certainly fits the bill but also, the song “For No One” is one of the all time best break up songs.

Doubling up on King Gizzard today. Teenage me would have been obsessed with this album, especially Han-Tyumi. And while I've tried to share it with my kids, leading with "Do you want to listen to Vomit Coffin" puts them off for some reason.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard ~ Murder of the Universe.
