The Beatles

Ya, I picked up the Anthology CDs for now, we'll see if an opportunity comes along ;)

It’s so annoying though that I can seemingly get two of a version reasonable and then the third is woof! Honestly if the Japanese De Agostini ones didn’t have a such a distinctive slip case I’d totally mix versions too! Oh well!

It's crazy to me how they let these things go out of print. There's such demand for them. I picked up all three anthologies a decade or so ago for nothing at all, cheap as chips. Naked, I got for retail too. It's my favourite version of it. But just wish they'd repress everything - same with the Monos. No reason for such popular records to cost so much.

Yeah beyond the main catalogue, red, blue and 1 everything else just seems to come and go randomly. The only repress of the Anthologies at all since the 90s is the De Agostini ones in various countries between 2017 and 2020. 1 and 3 can be found reasonably but the shipping is a tonne because no store has more than 1 edition and 2 is just randomly really expensive! Pain in the arse!

Yea, as someone who missed on the monos and is trying to just pick up value pressings, it's been such a pain. The 80s UK pressings were like $20 less than a year ago, now some are shooting up to $60 or more! Someone that controls the Beatles catalogue has to see that demand.

I was able to pick up 2 recently on eBay in the $50 range. It took a couple of months of watching and then some luck with the auction (the seller put up two copies for sale that ended at the same time, and I was able to snag the cheaper one at the last second). You might get lucky too.

As for 3, last year I lucked out on a used copy at my local for only $15. The reason was a mark that caused some ticking on a relatively irrelevant track.

I hope to someday get a copy of Naked for $40-$60. I would go much higher if it appears at my local and I’m able to trade in some stuff for it.

I’ve just put in an offer of £130 for all 3 anthologies with a seller in the UK. Will work out at £160 posted. It’s not great but it’s not terrible either. He had them listed for £160 with make an offer. Fingers crossed he’ll sell them. The real kicker, on top of high prices, if he doesn’t, is that no one else has all 3 so shipping each individually from different parts of Europe really piles on the costs.

LIBN I bought at the time. It isn't all that good IMO. Paul messed it up worse that Spector. The Let It Be box/remix, again IMO, makes the thing totally redundant, so expect prices to drop. The digital sound of the vinyl is not very good either - 16/44 sourcing.

The Anthology pressings were not fantastic either, and at this point, most meaningful out-takes from Sgt. Pepper onwards are available in better sound, and in most cases without the cut & paste of Anthology. There are some useful takes pre-Sgt. pepper, thatI imagine will be available on reissues eventually. My copies of Anthology are Japanese pressings which, while same source, are at least good pressings.

Too contribute ..my Mono U.K. 60s quest ...please, please and with secured and nice copies too..£25 and £12 (last one was a bit of a steal) ..a sgt peppers 1st press (complete with intact cut outs) a £20 bargain ..sounds superb ...

The White album ..feckin ell...I was contemplating a £100 bid...push the trigger ..and it went from £60 to £240 in the last 30 seconds ...that’s gonna be a tougher find

Since we're talking about it anyway, and I seem to be on the path of finally entering a Beatles phase...assuming the mono box does not get re-pressed, I saw several new copies of Revolver in stereo in the shop yesterday. Anyone know how the (I'm assuming) newest pressing of that is?

The current pressing in stores is the 2012 stereo pressings. They’re very nicely pressed do there isn’t usually issues with noise or warps but they were cut from the 2009 digital files done for the remaster series so they aren’t the greatest, they’re a little bit compressed and the soundstage isn’t the widest. For revolver it’s difficult because Giles didn’t touch that one. I think the best available stereo of that you might find that haven’t gone gaga might be the 80s UK Parlophone ones, they’re supposed to be quite good.

Interesting, I had no idea the 2009 remasters were poorly regarded. The MP3s were a revelation to me compared to the crappy 80s CDs. I’ve never heard any of their post-2009 vinyl.

On digital they’re great. Particularly the 24/96 files, best sounding I’ve heard them on digital. Using digital transfers to master a vinyl release when the tapes are available, and were used by Giles for 50ths and the mono ones, leads to vinyl pressings that are just not as a good as their AAA bedfellows. Every other pressing I’ve heard of those albums I’ve preferred.

Was the Mono box from the digital files or AAA?

Anyway this is good to know. I’ve considered picking up some of the current stereo pressings as upgrades to my old pressings, but now I’m glad I haven’t.

I’ve not seen anything definitive, but there are rumors the tapes are being locked away for good. I imagine they will give Giles a shot at everything first though.
Apparently this is the case. Beatles master tapes are incredibly valuable, possibly the most valuable master tapes in existence. The stereo master tapes have been used enough times that some are fragile, so after very high res digitization, they are staying in the vault.
The mono masters, on the other hand, did not see near as much use. They have been high-res digitized as well, but were used for the AAA vinyl set because the risk was much lower.
I would not expect AAA Beatles vinyl again. Even the monos - guessing here, but I would think the last AAA vinyl was a once and done deal, and I also imagine the pressing quantity was such that stampers are done as well.
