The Blue Note Thread

It’s very possible they will have a Buy 2 get 1 free sale by the time this is out. That would bring the price down by $100. Just worth noting...buy two other box sets around that price and cancel the other two.
I have the 3 x CD version: Lee Morgan - Live At The Lighthouse

The music is great but 12 x LPs? Check out the CD setlist: every song performed is 12-22 minutes long with average around 15 minutes. Many sides of the LP version will probably just be a single track.

Obviously we don't know exactly what's going to be included for certain, but if we assume this will be a 'Complete Sessions' package we can just look at the set-lists from his residency. So here are the tracks and the dates that the group played (presumably it will be in date order), it has been taken from Jeffrey S. McMillan's 'Delightfulee' book which is well worth reading:

If my maths is correct, 33 tracks over 11LPs is 3 per LP. So either we have a few single track sides or they add additional material from before the Lighthouse residency. I have mentioned here before that the group recorded 2 weeks before at the 'Both / And Club' in San Francisco which was kind of a 'warm up' to the Lighthouse session. It was recorded for FM radio (so better audio quality than bootleg) and released in part over 2 albums (which are on 2 low budget labels). This would add up to an extra 10 tracks.

Or if they were being really pedantic, they could include tracks from the 1957 recording 'Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars And Charli Persip's Jazz Statesmen – Double or Nothin’' which includes Morgan as a sideman. Doubtful on this one though considering its on a different label and would not really relate to the later Lighthouse residency.

Like I said when the rumors of this boxset first started spreading: I just hope we're getting a Tone-Poet-Quality standard 2LP release of this record. I like quite a bit, but I don't need every tune they played at the Lighthouse, and I sure don't need 12LPs to fill up space in my shelves.

For the UK people, I just spotted what looks like a good collection of 21 White & Black Label Blue Notes on eBay. Looks like a reasonable price at the minute, but still to rich for me in January.

but what if you've already run out of shelf space and have spilled right over to stacking boxes on the floor with duck-taped corners while your wife gives you hard side-eye and asks "how many records do you think you're going to buy this year?" -- then you're good, right?

it's okay?

we're good. we're good.

right? ah, to heck with it, I'm in anyway....have you seen the way 2021 is starting?

The good news for you is that the number of records you think you're going to buy this year probably is lower than the number you actually will buy, so it's the best question your wife could pose to you! ;) Of course from her perspective, that's also the bad news.
