The Blue Note Thread

Thanks for sharing this @JohnnyCashFan.

I find the part about people complaining to be especially funny. Imagine just a few years ago if they were told all these titles would be readily available for a fantastic price and in outstanding quality, they would have bitten your arm off. People have just become spoilt.

TBH my complaint these days would be they are too frequent. I don't have time to listen to all the records as it is.

A post below from Joe Harley about Tone Poet's some of you might find interesting.

I've been asked to write about the process of title choosing for the Tone Poet series:
1st, its important to note that the titles chosen are not the results of group meetings and careful analysis at Blue Note.
What I can say is that we have SO many great albums in the pipeline...many have already been mastered. There's plenty of incredible music coming,
Expect some surprises as well!
It sounds like he knows what’s in the pipeline well beyond what’s on the published release schedule. That may also be true for the Classics guy.

If so, I wish they would periodically disclose as full a list of titles as they know at any given time so we know what’s coming, beyond what’s in the official schedules.

I’ve got things on my Discogs want list like McLean’s “Let Freedom Ring” and “One Step Beyond” and Moncur’s “Some Other Stuff” and Andrew Hill’s “ Andrew!!!” that are possible Tone Poets.

I’d love to know if I can stop looking for one to pop up, and I certainly wouldn’t pay an inflated price now if I knew current prices reflected false scarcity. This last point — potential false scarcity— may the most important generally, for the whole market (not just for me and what I want).

He had confirmed before that he knows well in advance, I think they are hesitant to announce though in case of delays that are out of their control.

I get that, and that’s probably a fair concern for many/most consumers. But it’s not for me. I’d prefer to know what’s coming even if I have no clue when. And again, I think not disclosing fuels a negative byproduct in the market.

Really enjoying this Joe Henderson Inner Urge BN Classic. Just smokes! Optimal seems to have work out the kinks with pressing this series. Haven't had a bad one in 6 months.

Edit: spoke too soon. Found some non-fill on B1. Blast!

Edit edit: worst non fill I've experienced out of all my records. I was sooo wrong. Hopefully I can find a clean replacement copy.

I wonder how many of you have seen this before?

1954 Blue Note 10" release (Lex ave) which highlights a British jazz line up (Don Rendell, Johnny Dankworth, Allan Ganley, etc). Such great cover art as well. I was after this for ages but it rarely pops up for sale.

Did you just win this on Ebay? I was looking at a copy of this and nearly bid on it, but I'd just won a bid on a 2nd press of Ian Carr's Nucleus.

Was surprised to find this in a random record shop in the Catskills today

It’s a mono first pressing in surprisingly good shape. No splits on the jacket (lamination is starting to peel) and record looks VG+! Grabbed it for $30. Got a few other great buys too

It’s a bit comical to post this right after a $30 1st-press mono of a stone cold classic like Midnight Blue, but this was my big BN find yesterday. Also the first pressing (2004, lol) and vinyl is NM and sleeve is about that. Sounds fantastic. Cost me $35, which is $11 less than Discogs median and $35 less than what I’d pay to have the cheapest currently available copy shipped to me. But also $5 more than the going rate for a grail in the Catskills.

Probably my favorite MMW album next to Uninvisible. Great find!

Thanks. MMW is a top 5 band for me. I’ve seen them at least a couple dozen times since 1997. I picked up the VMP Univinvisible and The Dropper (both great), and I own Free Magic on vinyl. What I want most is my fav album and their BN debut, Combustication. I have a fantasy that they’ll reissue some kind of special edition w/ live material from that tour or extra material. I’ll buy it eventually, regardless.

They did a BN75 pressing of Combustication. It's a URP pressing, so mediocre at best. I'd love a Tone Poet of that title!
