The Blue Note Thread

I bet the new BNC list is out mid July or earlier.

A few 2023 releases, I picked up inexpensively and really liked are the Miles Vol 1, Hutch San Francisco, Little Johnny C.

Extension and the Bud Powell Time Waits are really enjoyable albums too for <$15.

Buhaina's Delight from SOV plus Freddie Hubbard – Open Sesame from Plaid sale is on the way. Nice to grab some older reissues!

Incredible $20 and under stuff to add to the collection. I never take these BNCsfor granted. They bring some incredible value.

This is about the only leak I've seen and it's official more than a leak.

could have sworn Joe Harley posted about cutting some other BNClassics that weren't officially announced yet, but tbh there are so many releases and reissues I could be completely mistaken. This might have been what I was thinking about.

And said "leak" because they hadn't officially announced the next batch of BNClassics yet.

Some titles have already been leaking on Joe's instagram. Forget which off the top of my head though.

But @Joe Mac hates jazz. Why would he be leaking BNC titles on his Insta?!

What have I done now? I swear I’ve not had a drink this week!

Oh hello jazz thread! I’ve not ventured in here in an age. Hope you’re all still very nice and friendly. Still not a fan of most of the music. Stay classy!

Could be more info out there. Harley is pretty good about spilling the beans on TPs but Cem is non-existant on social media from everything I have seen.

Isn't Third man doing those Verve by Request albums that have been so panned? This seems to be the same thing, but Blue Note. Which just means more mediocre/bad pressings of albums that really really deserve good ones
these are mastered at Third Man and from analogue at least. the VBR were almost all from digital but cut by RKS. i don't know the guy who is doing the mastering at Third Man....my hopes are not high on this one.

the VBRs suffer most from shitting sources I think. RKS cut them and they weren't up to his usual standard sound-wise. I gave up after 2 releases in that series.

The VBR are the best you are going to get at this stage.

This BN-TMR is really getting to milking the BN catalog for the bucks at this point.

Having said that, the Thad Jones is a good record, Genesis is killer and essential, the Kenny Cox is under-rated, the Electric Byd is awesome and desperately in need of a decent reissue, and the Green smokes cpurtesy of Houston Person and Ronnie Foster. Great titles.

I disagree about the VBR being the best we are going to get. BeWith's pressing of The Awakening was from digital and much better. I don't doubt the VMP Blossom Dearie will be better than the VBR. Same with Rubiyat. The AS series sound great.

Verve is just shitty when they do their own reissue series in-house.

Here's some more info on this series:

The original tapes were sent to Third Man’s Detroit mastering and pressing facility where their extensive all analog re-mastering process ensured that the albums delivered live up to the tradition they are part of. The Third Man Records team’s commitment to audio purity means no corners can be cut; sound and mastering engineer Warren Defever’s goal being to provide the closest possible approximation of the magic found on the original master's tape brought to your living room. From the lacquers cut in the studio on the Neumann VMS-70 Cutting Lathe to the 180 gram vinyl pressed across the hall, every step of the process is tested in the facilities against exacting standards.
