The Dark Side; Digital audio equipment recommendations and setup.

The ability to do that depends on your level and type of crazy. I start a job like that and I lose track of the concepts of time and the outside world until it’s finished….
I think if I were to do that then there’d have to be some sort of surreal environmental happening that gave me the need of a personal mission.

Off the top of my head something like a worldwide major health event that meant nobody could leave their house for months so had time to burn (cds). But honestly… what’s the chances of something like that ever happening

Honestly, at times the digital/computer side of this stuff is really frustrating. First the Kefs decided to ignore my NAS, and now the Linn isn't connecting to the network. I need to remember that pulling the power cord is a legitimate IT fix - it sorted the Kefs, and I think I'm going to have to do it for the Linn.

By using optical, am I leaving anything on the table just by its inherent constraints, considering I’m only streaming Tidal?
In my limited and non-scientific testing, yes you would be leaving a small amount on the table with optical.
System dependent, so take it with a grain of salt. Best bet is to test it at home in your system.

There's no rush. It's not like anyone is stopping cable production :)

Alright kiddos, my daughter upgraded her iPad which means I’m keeping her previous one for system streaming. What do I need to get to achieve hi res lossless?
Dongle dac is the easiest and quickest. Does the iPad have usb-c? If so you can get a splitter so you can charge at the same time as streaming. Connect a RCA Y cable to the dac and other to receiver

Use it to control a streamer or
  • Turn on lossless audio: Go to Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality > Lossless Audio
  • Choose audio quality: Select Lossless for a maximum resolution of 24-bit/48 kHz, or Hi-Res Lossless for a maximum resolution of 24-bit/192 kHz
  • Listen to lossless audio: Use a wired connection to headphones, receivers, or powered speakers, or use the iPad's built-in speakers

I was looking for a desk-top CD transport player and saw this which can also rip

I was thinking of adding a CD player/transport to my system and saw this mentioned a couple of months ago (Darko?). It’s at a price point and size that it would fit into my system for the rare occasion I would listen to a CD. It would also be good to have for ripping CDs.

Connect it to a USB DAC and stream from a service that provides hi- res audio. I do this all the time from my iPad. See systems 4 in my profile.

Are you looking to do this with a headphone setup or a speaker based system? In either case a USB cable and USB DAC are all you need to get going.

Potentially hot alternative take, but this is what I'm doing: the Fiio DM13 portable CD player has a digital out. I'm going to connect that to my optical in in my DAC and use that (I also need to work out if I can do optical out on the CD and SPDIF in on my LSX's).

My thinking is that this keeps the system box count low, I can switch it between systems, and use it as a portable player if I ever need to. Haven't connected it up yet, but it's pretty solid as a player.

Not sure if you’re use-case is headphones, but, if so, since back to my wired headphones days, I’ve used one of these. It’s $20 and simple, so I’m sure there are better options, but it’s worked well for me.
