The February Record Spin Challenge - It's All Connected, Maaaannnnn

Fell off last month’s challenge but will give it another go. This is a really cool theme! I like that everyone will have pretty unique selections from each other.

1. Play an album or song that asks a question.

U.S. Girls - In a Poem Unlimited

Contains the track “Why Do I Lose My Voice When I Have Something to Say?”

3. Play the sonic opposite of yesterday’s pick.
Townes Van Zandt – For The Sake Of The Songcountry can be considered opposite of rap
4. Play an album by an artist that would make for an interesting collaboration with yesterday’s artist.
Kendra Morris – MockingbirdI think Kendra and Townes would have gotten along nicely

I am travelling these next few days, so here's an old photo of Kendra and a TVZ banner on the wall.

Day 4 Play an album by an artist that would make for an interesting collaboration with yesterday’s artist

Edan "Beauty and The Beat" - this is a fantastic psychedelic rap record so why not follow it up by doing a collab with a folky acoustic band from Canada that seemed to only be making music for themselves and a few friends!! It'll sell MILLIONS!!! Edan meets Blind Owl... LET'S GO!

5. Play 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon with the next pick- find some way in 6 steps or less to connect the musicians involved in today’s album with those on yesterday’s.

Nine Inch Nails ➡️ Bowie
They toured together in 1995

David Bowie - 1. Outside

Okay, Mr. Lif was a feature on yesterday's album, he was on EL-P's Fantastic Damage, EL-P did a song with Zack De La Rocha who is in a band with Tom Morello who is in Prophets of Rage with Chuck D of PUBLIC ENEMY!!

Public Enemy "Fear of a Black Planet" - I'm sure there was an easier path but I got there!

Beauty and The Beat > Mr. Lif > EL-P > Zack > Tom > Chuck > Fear of a Black Planet

4. Play an album by an artist that would make for an interesting collaboration with yesterday’s artist.

Mavis Staples – Time Waits For No One

Paisley Park era Mavis and Kid Creole already have a Prince connection between them with his having written songs for each of them, a step further into an actual collaboration would've been rad!

I played Kraftwerk on day 3. They turned down a request from Bowie to collaborate with him. I think Bowie would have been one of the few people that could have integrated/collaborated with them successfully.

Had some time this morning to play them all, so bear with me…

Starting with Modest Mouse (played yesterday)…

Jeremiah Green was the drummer in Modest Mouse, and was also drummer of the Seattle band Vells

The lead singer of Vells, Tristan, worked at Easy Street Records in Seattle where Mark Pickerel also worked. Mark was a drummer of Screaming Trees in their earlier years

The lead singer of Screaming Trees was Mark Lanegan, who was a member of Queens of the Stone Age for a bit

Dave Grohl was drummer on this record. He’s also in Foo Fighters

The video for “Everlong” is a classic, directed by Michel Gondry, who also directed the video for Daft Punk’s “Around The World”

So many possible paths to go down, but I really wanted to hear this band, so I'm going with this.

5. Play 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon with the next pick- find some way in 6 steps or less to connect the musicians involved in today’s album with those on yesterday’s. (Alanis Morissette)

Both Flea & Dave Navarro played on You Oughta Know > Dave Navarro was a host on the ill conceived Rock Star: INXS reality tv show.
As if anyone could ever replace Hutch. Easily the best front man I've ever had the privilege to see live

INXS - Listen Like Thieves

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JUNE TYSON (February 5, 1936 – November 24, 1992)

June Tyson – Saturnian Queen Of The Sun Ra Arkestra

Mavis Staples' Time Waits For No One was co-produced by Lester Snell.
Lester Snell arranged Cleveland Eaton's Bama Boogie Woogie.
Cleveland Eaton played with The Count Basie Orchestra who backed Joe Williams for his Live At Orchestra Hall, Detroit performance.
Joe Williams put out an album in 1956 called Sings Everyday featuring uncredited arrangements by one Le Sony'r Ra.
Le Sony'r Ra built the Arkestra which featured June Tyson as a long-time member from 1968 until her passing in 1992.

I could have done it in one step since Neil Young is connected to so many artists, but I'll take it further for fun.

Neil was in The Last Waltz
The Last Waltz featured The Band
Four members of The Band played on this Bobby Charles record - Danko, Hudson, Manuel and Helm.

4. Play an album by an artist that would make for an interesting collaboration with yesterday’s artist.

Yesterday I played a Herbie Hancock record. And as much as he loves electronic sounds and computers I bet he could do something interesting with an electronic music artist/composer like Nicolas Jaar.

4. Play an album by an artist that would make for an interesting collaboration with yesterday’s artist.
Outkast "ATLiens"
(1996 LaFace Records; 2021 club edition)
I played Elvin Jones yesterday. Were he still be with us, his drumming would probably be great accompaniment to André 3000 and Big Boi.

Floating Points - Elaenia

Seeing what he did collaborating with Pharoah Sanders, I have no doubt Floating Points could have cooked up something interesting with Coltrane.
