The Grammy Awards Thread

I mean, I've tried to like Harry's music. It's just ... someone said something about someone's album being like staring at a beige wall for an hour... that pretty much describes it (despite the insane boredom that would cause me)... it's just okay... not gonna turn the station if it comes on, but not gonna seek it out.

My boyfriend loves Harry’s music so I’ve heard his whole solo discography over the years in his car. When the songs on I always make a mental note of which songs I like and I do like a good amount of them but once they are off I just completely forget about them, and when I do eventually seek them out I just think about other songs I’d rather be listening to. They are perfect songs to hear on the radio but they aren’t good enough to go out of your way for

I think if he came out of the
Indie sphere as opposed to boy band sphere folks here would be a lot kinder to his output
Agree to disagree. I feel this album would be just as forgettable regardless. The Indie snobbery at least here on N&G boards barely exists. Popism won. The issue I have is when the music machine is pushing Styles as a modern day Bowie or at Elton John because he occasionally wears a dress but the songs have never been there. There are no ear worms on any of his albums. One Direction had better songs. Nothing draws me in as a listener. He makes pop albums that lack pop songs.

I think he has a fine voice and he seems like a decent fellow, I feel like the industry attempts to project him as a massive pop talent but has yet to release a single song that captured the zeitgeist. Even the song about going down on a girl was completely forgettable.

I mean… the board said The Smile, Alvvays, and BCNR were the three best albums of the year. It doesn’t get much more Indie snobby than that for 2022. Beyoncé was out of the Top 5.

Agree to disagree for sure but I hear plenty of ear worms and great songs in there. Elton’s an interesting comparison since I think Harry’s output trounces Elton’s, frankly, exceedingly uneven and forgettable early work (Tumbleweed had some strong gambles). Elton revved it up later for sure once he went glam but those first four had a lot of misses. It’s to be seen if Harry can have his GYBR imo.

The Elton and Bowie comparisons are even more interesting since neither of them have won AOTY but Harry now has lol

I dont try to predict Grammy winners but I nominate you for and predict that you will win Hot Take of the Year.

Also, Harry Styles has a very nice voice but I think it is forgettable pop and I like pop. And I do feel there is something contrived with him (although I imagine a good music "career" will always have that). I have heard he likes Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, so he gets major points for that.

Just because the consensus of the board is that those three albums were the best albums of the year doesn't mean the board is indie snobby. The Weeknd was #4 for god's sake. Beyonce also made the top ten!!!

Harry is not on a plane with Elton John yet. Harry also made a bunch of (imo) forgettable music with One Direction before he made three bland solo albums... Elton didn't have that bit of workshopping....

If you want to clip the quote it is. Empty Sky is a worse album than HS1. Elton’s ST was critically mixed and was still a breakout but Fine Line was a much deeper album with, imo, similar highs. HH vs Tumbleweed is a taste matter, I get that argument for sure.

Oh yeah I'm not too serious about it. I don't agree with it. But, in the end, Mr. Styles' success takes nothing away from me and I wish him more of it and lasting.

The statement was no indie snobbiness and Ethel Cain is between Beyoncé and Kendrick. I’m not saying the board doesn’t recognize good pop but it’s a board with its biases like any other one and it’s absolutely towards Indie. And that’s fine.

And if you like, Harry had One Direction seasoning and Elton got Bernie Taupin. Harry hasn’t reached peak Elton yet and he probably never will, nor did I say as much, but purely in early output I know where my edge lies. Does Harry have that next gear though? Eh…

Elton’s self-titled wasn’t his best for sure but strangly enough it was nominated for AOTY while Madman, Honky Chateau, and GYBR were not.
