The Grammy Awards Thread

The AOTY argument is fun and interesting. Looking at sales, it's obviously Midnights. Looking at critical consensus (using metacritic) it seems like it's GUTS.

Joni ruled, Jay Z was kind of embarrassing, and I liked the in memoriam performances. Also some sword swinging above a suddenly conveniently placed Janelle Monae and Phoebe Bridgers (who seemed to find it a hoot.)

Grammys are such a weird experience when you listen to all the good music that actually comes out in a year. Like it blows my mind that so much of the world truly believes the artists and albums nominated for Grammys are indicative of the best music that came out in the last year.

It’s just a show that pits industry plant versus industry plant, it’s not an open dialogue with the actual music world. The few Grammy nominated artists that actually deserve to be there seem to always get snubbed. As a result, I haven’t watched a Grammys since Macklemore beat out Kendrick Lamar.

I loved Jay-Z’s speech. “Some of y’all don’t deserve to be in the category” feels like my thoughts in a nutshell. Every year I look and say “Who’s nominated? Oh riiiiiiiiiiigght, yeah that’s hilarious but ok”. These categories are just not representative of the talent that’s out there making music with their whole heart and soul, just feels representative of who the big labels have sunk the most money into.

Anyway shouts out HOV for telling the truth!
The word I take exception to in here is "music", which IMO has nothing to do with the Grammys.

@Fleetwood-Matt it would be kinda fun to put together a revisionist Grammy’s where we post a poll for each year’s Grammy AOTY Nominations and see who N&G thinks shoulda won the award each year.

endorsed

(and i not so secretly hope beyonce loses aoty EVERY TIME)

grammys is about the music industry

Curious, how many people participated?

I really don’t know if I have it in me to care about an awards show rn but I’ll try

My AOTY nom predictions. Top 8 are the ones I’m feeling and bottom 4 are alternatives. I’m probably way over rating Post and VW’s chances here but my gut is still telling me to leave em in.

Record/song of the year will probably include a good amount of these artists plus Shaboozey and Kendrick.

BNA is a category I never even pretend to understand but it’s a three way race between Sabrina, Chappell and Shaboozey. Benson Boone and Teddy Swims will most likely also be there. Hoping last dinner party gets one of the remaining slots

I mean Beyonce has to win this year if she's ever going to win AOTY. She stepped out of her own genre to create something that was well received. I like Taylor but that album is a terrible effort. Even my Swiftie daughter isn't a fan of more than a handful of songs off it. I think Chappell takes Best New Artist (Khruangbin being in that category is a real WTH). I hope Not Like Us wins Best Song.

I’m just worried for Beyonce because it feels like she doesn’t have the momentum going into this that Lemonade or Renaissance had. I also just don’t like it as much as either of them but I want her to get a win in this category. I’m not going to count Swift out but if she wins I think I’ll just give up completely on the Grammys. Chappell and Billie feel like the most likely non SwIft/Beyonce options.

Not like Us winning Record of the year would be glorious but I’m pulling for Espresso personally.

BNA already has Chappell’s name engraved on the trophy, but I’m really pulling Doechii
