The National

I finally emailed about my concert ticket cause I still haven't received it (or a shipping notice). Their response was pretty much verbatim what was in the original ticket order email.

Sooo...I just gotta wait, basically and hope I don't have to email a week prior to the show (which is just three weeks away).

I mean, basically the price gives you two good things: early access to ticket sales and the annual exclusive vinyl. Signing up for Cherry Tree is the only way to get that exclusive vinyl at the end of the year (unless you want to pay over $100 for it on Discogs). So, for that reason alone, I'd say it's worth it.

Other than that, you get access to a member's store that has additional merch items (like a lot of exclusive show posters), but that's not for everyone. There's not much else the membership gets you, but I'm still holding out hope that they do some cooler things in the future.
They're also done access to their sound check at some shows, although I haven't seen that recently.

Late to the game here... Haven't been able to spin anything this week for various reasons, so finally gave in and listening to the new album on Spotify now. This is really amazing, tbh... I anticipated it needing multiple listens to fall into place, but it is just WORKING for me. Not In Kansas, Roman Holiday, and Oblivions are my standouts so far.

I'm a week and about 9-10 full listens through it (and yet I haven't spun the vinyl yet - ARGH). Totally seared into my brain and I adore it to death. Can't wait to rip the vinyl tomorrow morning, when the family are out, LOUD.

So I'm on like day two or three of listening to The National. Never heard their music before that. I've listened to several albums and I'm blown away. This shit is awesome.

Looked up that Cherry Tree gang. Is it worth it - $50 for the club seems a lot?
The limited club LP is going for like $300 so yes

So I think this might be better than SWB. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t really care for Day I Die or The System from SWB. They’re fine songs but seem too simple for The National. There’s nothing I really dislike from IAETF except for Dust Swirls In Strange Light, but that’s excusable when there’s 16 songs. This is a good album. I’ve listened to it about 20 times so far and it’s not losing steam yet.

So on my drive home yesterday, I was listening to the exclusive show recorded at Union Transfer in Philly for subscribers and fan club members on SXMU, and I gotta say the new songs sounded amazing live! The band performed Oblivions, The Pull of You, Hey Rosey, I Am Easy to Find, Where Is Her Head, Light Years, Rylan and Not in Kansas (encore).

These songs just have so much more energy and life than SWB songs. I love the second half of SWB but those songs are much more delicate than this album. I was listening to I’ll Still Destroy You on my drive into work today and it just felt lifeless from how I remembered it.

Wow that’s a lot of people on the stage. Great performance though.

I’d love to see Matt go full Squalor Victoria at the end of that song live, there’s so much energy in those final verses and it’s begging for him to let loose.

I still like SWB, but it definitely is a sleepier album. I'll Still Destroy You...I still love it a lot. I still enjoy the whole thing really. And this one is probably better, but it makes me feel weird to say that since it's only been out for a week.

I was having the same thoughts. Like, I was torn about claiming it better when I haven’t spent a lot of time with it yet. I’ve spent so much time and have good memories with SWB and saying it’s not as good feels wrong. They can both still be good but one slightly better

I liked SWB more than High Violet and probably more than TWFM. I'm always surprised when I go back and listen to it how good it is.

I'm finally getting in a full listen of IAETF and it's....long. I know it will grow on me and there are some major highlights. Not In Kansas is definitely a classic National song.

I’m going to pretend you didn’t attack The System as that song fucking rips

I’m actually surprised so hear all these negative opinions on SWB. Yeah, the album is slower throughout, but I think it is one of the best albums they have made, solely because it is something that works front to back as one piece of art and storytelling. It’s an album
that demands to be listened to front to back, not picked apart for singles. While it’s a challenging listen, I think it’s so powerful and such a masterclass in writing that only bands like The National can do.

How do you feel about the new album? Because you pretty much just described IAETF right there, minus the challenging listen, of course.

Look look look SWB was my second favorite album that came out in 2017. I love SWB. But it’s not as good as the new one. I have a pillowcase that says sleep well beast they were selling at one of their shows, that I sleep on every night. It’s just slightly not as good as IAETF

I’m also just finding things that make me realize the new one is better, those two songs always felt too “Grateful Dead-rocky” for me as National songs. I’ve listened to them about 50 times and enjoy them to an extent but criticism is still there.
