Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca

I have never listened to this album. Last.fm tells me I listened to Lamp Lit Prose once.

I saw Dirty Projectors open for Björk and enjoyed their set, but I don't believe I've ever listened to one of their albums.

Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca

Angular, kinda Mathy.

Nice voice.

Wouldn't be out of place on Dischord.

Don't like this one.

Completely falls off a cliff from track 4, just want it to end now.

Urgh, started off so well.

2 / 5 stars.

No. That's the album after that. Swing Lo Magelllan istill has the same singers as this one.
On Bitte Orca the group had 3 female vocalists; Amber Coffman, Angel Deradoorian, and Haley Dekle. For their follow up, Swing Lo Magellan Angel Deradoorian had left the group.

Following that release The lead singer, David Longstreth and Amber Coffman, who had been dating; broke up and she left the group as well. Which resulted in his break up album that I don’t believe featured any female vocalists at all.

Ah, ok. That all sounds very familiar now.

Angel was my favorite she contributed some vocals to one Hamilton Leathouser solo albums as well. Both her and Amber have released solo albums that are pretty good.

My favorite solo release by a member of the Dirty Projectors was Nat Baldwins, which features an amazing cover of my favorite Arthur Russell tune, “A Little Lost”.

I've got 2 of Deradoorian's albums, love them both.

Also, there are several albums that I would buy if I came upon them in the wild. This is the first new rabbit hole I want to explore. There is a lot here that appeals to me... very impressive vocal harmonies, interesting melodic structures and challenging composition.

It's also cool to have a bit of perspective on the long term feel of the group. I might explore all but I know that the Black Flag project through the album after this and solo records are things I want to check out.

Earlier stuff isn’t bad either, reminds me a bit of that first Grizzly Bear album in that David Longstreth had bigger ideas than he had means to pull all off but it’s still interesting.

Also, not sure if you are familiar with the Dark Was The Night compilation. It was a charity comp compiled and produced by the Dressner Brothers from The National. They were also the guys that put together that killer Day of The Dead Grateful Dead covers comp. Anyways the Dark Was The Night comp is fantastic because lots of interesting covers and collaborations basically by a venerable list of who’s who in late 00s indie rock scene. Included on there is probably the perfect collaboration for Dirty Projectors, they preform a song with David Byrne and it’s a stellar track…

…and a super fun live performance of the track sans Byrne.
