The Official Needles and Grooves 1001 Album Generator Project (aka Preachin’ about the Preachers if today’s selection sucks)

I'm kind of in the same boat. I've always had trouble listening to this one as it just feels like a bunch of samples thrown together. Wildflower is probably the one I've listened to the least. The newer one is actually my favorite one to listen to because I like all of the collaborations. It's a very different feel from this one. Maybe this will be the listen where this one clicks.
I know I keep harping on this but The Zomba Promo version really does fill in some of the gaps which results in the whole album flowing in an even smoother fashion. You can hear the difference almost immediately when the first song transitions to to the next track.

Yeah, this really clicked this time…. ended up giving it two more listens today on top of last night’s. I don’t think I know it well enough to readily know the differences in your preferred version @TenderLovingKiller® , it did feel more like a brother of Wildflower (more hip hop edge). while the current version on Qobuz, at least, feels like it is more closely aligned to dance music. I couldn’t really give you specifics beyond a feeling. A lot of the second disc of stuff on the deluxe version vibes more with that later sound too.

It has a familiarity to it that feels lived in. I don’t know about the rest of you, but this is how I feel about Stevie’s 70’s run - it’s like it’s always been a part of me. I like when modern music gives me that same feeling like DangerDoom’s “Old School” or DJ Honda’s “Trouble in the Water” (Hell the first two De La albums live in that feeling). Yeah, it’s nostalgic but not really derivative (beyond the inherent derivative nature of turntable music). It’s like a more optimistic version of DJ Shadow’s vision.

I still think I like Wildflower better, but a half dozen listens to this and I understand its charms.

Also, no TLK, neither the book or Allmusic talk about the concept that at least inspired, if not ultimately fulfilled by, the album.

I guess at some point, I need to give the new album a listen.

The cover on Spotify I think is the original, the All Music one was for one of the 12 inches. Funny thing is This is the Day was a minor hit for him in North America but was not on the UK version of the album.

Edit: got that wrong, it is the song Perfect that was added for areas outside of the UK. Great album. I got a nice pressing of the recent UK reissue in 22

Couple of initial thoughts…. I’ll probably give this at least one more listen this weekend.

1. This ain’t the album that’s gonna win me over.
2. It feels conflicted… his singing is way forward and just too much, he’s being performative and it gives me the ick.
3. The band seems okay but it’s buried behind an acoustic guitar that’s buried behind him.
4. What’s even the point of the orchestration if you are gonna bury it behind all that other stuff? It’s like Metallica hiring Trujillo just to turn off his track in the mix.
6. In conclusion… I’d like to have a word with whatever clown mixed this.
7. I like the last three songs a lot.

8. Is there a good tribute album for Nick Cave? I feel like this is gonna be like Dylan where I need to hear these great songs performed by someone else before I can really appreciate him.
