How familiar are the two of you with the character at all? I'm wondering if my familiarity is ruining the experience.

Episode three was the worst.

I am very familiar with the character, but coming into the show with zero expectations in order to allow it to be it's own thing.
I'm only a little familiar with the character, but also feel like these things require this no expectation approach to take them on as their own thing. And I'm appreciating the ride this show is taking us on. Overall I think it's quite good, but to each their own.

To be honest I haven't really ranked them yet.

I enjoyed episode 3. As I said, I'm going in blind so I thought the idea of the avatars, the star scene, and the fight scenes were all really good. It was really the first episode where they seem to be highlighting the different skill sets between Marc and Steven and realising they might need to allow each other control to utilise these.

I'm really enjoying the show so far although I think there's some uneven parts. I get the other gods don't trust Khonshu but it's weird they can't figure out what Harrow's doing or even look into it at all. It was funny how Khonshu was talking about needing an ironclad case against Harrow and then just starts shouting stuff. Harrow popping up everwhere was kinda funny too. But overall I like it a lot, Arthur Isaac and May Calamway are fantastic and I'm really curious about what else is going on. I'm assuming there's a 3rd personality that takes control sometimes and Layla has another purpose/mission we haven't heard about yet. I wish there were a few more episodes to build things up.

Oh totally this.

Gods- What are you doing in the desert, sneaking around and suspiciously digging with a little beetle drone thing that is definitely not going to be a toy I can buy at Walmart in about a week and a half?

Very Bad Guy- Nothing, I'm on vacation. Look, I have a sun hat.

Khonshu- HE IS LYING, HE IS VERY BAD JUST LOOK AT HIM.

Gods- K, but do you have any proof?

Khonshu- -pause- HE HAS A CANE.

Very Bad Guy- -shrugs-

Gods- Right, that's it then? The cane?

Khonshu- ITS AN EEEEVIL CANE.

Gods- Okay I think we're done here, enjoy your vacation. Love the hat. Khonshu stop being a dick or we'll turn you into a newt. Toodles everyone...

By worst, I think I meant has the most conveniences.

Anyway, I want to be on the same page as those that are enjoying themselves, so I started it again in hopes that "binge" viewing is the cure. Take note of Steven Grant's interaction with the child in the museum. It may be the most important thing you've already forgotten.

Say what you want about Zack Snyder, but I watched the theatrical version of Justice League last night for the first time since 2017 and wooooooof. I can't blame him for being upset because if the studio let Joss Whedon come in and do that to my movie I'd probably be pretty pissed as well. The power of editing is amazing.

Sooooo... The Batman... 3 hours long eh...

It... did not need to be 3 hours long.
I'm going to rewatch it tonight and see if my mind is changed but this is a criticism I have to heavily disagree with personally. In the theater I didn't at all feel the three hours, I had a blast and it really flew by. Unlike a lot of superhero movies there wasn't a ton of unnecessary fat or subplots, it was just one Batman story that took its time to unfold.

Besides the length, what did you think of it?

I thought it LOOKED very good. Loved the design. Fight and chase scenes were rad as hell, especially the car chase. I thought the script was so bad that it bordered on camp and that it desperately needed an R rating because it came off like Disney doing Se7en. I think it either needed to lean into the noir camp it was pedaling or go full Se7en in the other direction. But it just kind of straddled this uncomfortable middle line where neither worked for me. I thought there was almost zero character development for anyone and considering the length that's kinda insane that they managed to stuff it with so many tentpole scenes that they didn't have any time to actually learn anything about any of the characters beyond just some real basic stuff to move the plot along. I didn't think it pulled off the tone it was trying to follow. The whole time i just kept thinking how the Dark Knight did this already but far more effectively. The plot was overly jumbled with way too many things unnecessarily going on behind the scenes. There's a whole lot of "how" and almost no "why". And that's a big problem for me with movies like this.
Not to say I thought it was BAD, I'd give it a B-. I just wonder what they could have done if they went full R and maybe took about 45 minutes off the run time.

Okay, so we disagree on more than just the length. 😂 I respect you taking the time to type out your thoughts, but I think this is a case where we'll have to agree to disagree because we clearly want different things from our Batman movies! (And that's okay)

Haha totally. I mean despite what I said it's still probably my second favorite Batman movie behind Dark Knight. I just was really hoping for more than what I got. But that car chase scene, man that was good. The audio in the movie also might be the best I've ever heard in terms of how hard hitting everything is. That car engine is bonkers.

See, The Dark Knight wouldn't even crack my top three Batman movies personally... I guess I prefer my comic book movies with a bit of a camp. To me, The Batman hit the perfect note of taking itself seriously and having a darker tone while still feeling like a comic book come to life (not to imply comics can't be serious, but you know what I mean). I see why people love the Nolan films and I can put on The Dark Knight and enjoy it, but I'm much more likely to go for something like one of the Burton movies because they appeal to my tastes more.
