The Super Thread - All Things Marvel/DC/Etc

I was gonna blame the costume change on Joss Whedon’s run on Astonishing X-Men but I double checked and Joss didn’t start on Astonishing until 2004 and the movie came out in 2000.
I think it can mostly just be blamed on where superhero movies were at the time. Batman & Robin had only happened three years ago when X-Men came out so I'm sure the studio was taking great pains to avoid making it too campy. Really it's only been probably in the last few years that superhero movies have become big enough to where they are willing to portray more comic-accurate designs in live action and even then sometimes they still feel the need to tone it down (like with the upcoming Eternals).

Costumes aside, seeing X-Men on opening night as a teenager, in a packed theater, was one of the most fun movie-going experiences I've ever had.

I've been interested to watch this though not sure how. I'm pretty sure I've only seen the theatrical version.
You can rent it on Amazon. I'm not sure if the version on Disney plus is the original or the rogue cut. I got the blu-ray years ago when it was released.

Rewatched the first X-Men movie for the first time in probably over a decade and it's held up quite well imo. I think a big strength to it compared to a lot of modern superhero movies is that it feels very... genuine, if that's that's word? Like the people making the movie think this is the coolest shit and want you to think so as well. It was also kind of refreshing to see a superhero movie where the humor was used more sparingly and serious moments were allowed to happen and be treated as such. I'm still not a huge fan of the costume changes but everything else in the movie is strong enough for me to look past that. Interested to see X2 again now because to be honest I only recall bits and pieces from the first three X-Men movies since I saw them at such a young age.
I feel like there was a change at some point that shifted focus from a good solid story to being an over the top, special effects-driven film.

What I like about the first one is that you learn about the idea of mutants and their individual powers at the same time as the characters. You see Magneto use his powers for the first time and see his reaction, you see Rogue's powers as she kisses her boyfriend and how scared she is, etc. Plus you also see 'regular' peoples reactions to these powers as well. Even the characters that already know their powers are shown from Rogues perspective (ie the first time we see Wolverine use them and when she's being guided through the school, etc).

X2 no longer needs these kinds of introductions (although there are still a fair few) but there's still a really solid story behind it that builds up the overall universe.

I guess what I really like is that its almost as if you could remove the mutant element from the film and it would still hold up as having a good overall story with lots of relevant themes (self-discovery, the feeling of belonging, the idea of Magento essentially replicating the horrors that were inflicted upon him, etc).

The later ones start off with a solid story from the comics (Apocalypse for example) but then shift focus to the spectacle of special effects and fight scenes which look fantastic, but seem to ignore the story a lot of the time.

Also the magento - professor x relationship and dynamic is great. that shared history makes MAgneto one of the most fleshed out villains in superhero movies. As much as i like some of the mcu films, creating strong villain characters with a relatable motivation isn´t exactly their strong suit

Completely agree! Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen's dynamic is just fantastic and they really bring the characters to life.

Yeah, X2 kicks ass. It's in many ways a perfect sequel to the first one and manages to introduce a lot of ideas and characters without ever feeling too overloaded. The writing and action overall are a step up from the first too.

The Last Stand was a bit better than I remembered it being, but still a pretty big step down from the first two. The Phoenix subplot is completely wasted since they decide to put more focus on "the cure" anyways. The fact that so much of the team from the first two movies just aren't there doesn't help. That said, it has its moments, and like everyone else says, Kelsey Grammer as Beast is awesome.

Considering watching X-Men Origins: Wolverine to see if it's as bad as I remember it being back in 2009.

...probably worse.
Yeah, it's pretty bad. I think seeing it again now knowing that they do get better afterwards made me less harsh on it, but it is by far the worst of the series up to this point. I will say that it is actually so dated that it's kind of entertaining in a "yup, this is definitely a bad movie from 2009" way. Hard to believe a film can become such a relic in just twelve years but they managed it.

It's really just a baffling movie on a conceptual level, because it teases us with some scenes about Logan's life before agreeing to be part of the Weapon X program, which would have made for a far more interesting story. But no, we have to bring Stryker into it again for whatever reason and it has to be all about him getting the adamantium because we haven't seen enough of that yet 🙄 and the less said about the movie's treatment of Deadpool the better.

Luckily for me, First Class was just added to Disney+ today so I'd say I'll probably get to that one tonight.

Also, for those who have seen it, is the extended version of The Wolverine worth going out of my way to find? I really would prefer to watch it over the theatrical version but it looks like I'm either going to have to import a Blu-ray or spend $10 to buy it digitally.

I commend you for being able to give it another chance. I don't think I have ever left a movie theater as annoyed as I was after seeing it.

So, watched eternals yesterday and liked it. I don´t know anything abut the comic book material of the eternals, so it was one of the few superhero movies, where the plot twists surprised me. It´s optically different from a lot of the other mcu movies as it looks a little grittier in parts. i found more plot and the long exposition did the movie good and found the characters pretty relatable. So i´m in the favourable camp.
I think it shows what the mcu showrunners do good. Managning a common universe , connecting plotlines etc, butt getting in enough different film-makers from different backgrounds to have movies with a completely different feel within this universe.
