Taft's Brewing in Cincinnati sold the remainder of their business to Cincinnati Beverage Company today.
Taft's at one point was poised to be the clear #3 in the Cincinnati brewing scene behind Rhinegeist and MadTree. They expanded and opened a large production facility outside of downtown as well as a taproom in Columbus, OH. Their OG location and Columbus taproom both closed prior to today, leaving only their production facility, which was doing a lot of contract brewing for other companies to supplement their own beer brewing. The writing was on the wall.
Cincinnati Beverage Company owns a lot (and I mean A LOT) of legacy Cincinnati brewing trademarks, most notably the Christian Moerlein brand. I made the below meme showing their current portfolio. The ones with logos are currently in production. The others are legacy, pre-prohibition breweries from the Cincinnati area that are not (yet) in production. The company is currently rehabbing a BEAUTIFUL old brewery building just north of the historic Over The Rhine district in Cincy to resurrect some of the old brands. I've heard it's already way over budget and there were questions of whether they'd actually have the capital to finish. Well, they at least had the capital to acquire Taft's, so that's promising for the rehab project.
As for the current centerpiece of their portfolio, Moerlein, that brand was on a quality rollercoaster up until they purchased it. During the craft beer boom infancy it was one of the best quality brands in the city. As things matured, the quality really dropped. A number of acquisitions followed and their taproom closed, leaving only the Moerlein brewhouse restaurant next to Great American Ballpark remaining. I've heard that ever since CinBev bought it, the quality is back up. Hoping that same result can be passed across to the other brands as they launch.
