The Technics Turntable Fan Club - Questions, Advice, Discussion

Wow been awhile guys but I’m back! Anyhoo just ordered a Hexmat which I’m getting tomorrow and I will review it in relation to how it sounds on my Technics 1200-G

Very curious about this. Please do share your impressions. Do you also have other mats to compare it to?

What turntable do you have on your first system & how does it compare?

I have a second 1210 in which the tracking broke, I've had them for nearly 30 years. I'm not sure if to mod it with a new arm & get it serviced or buy something new

The spindle on my 1210 is pretty short but there is enough for my Michell clamp to grip it. This might be an issue depending on what mat you're using on your table. Personally, I replaced the OEM rubber mat with a 4mm thick Herbie's. Should be ok if you're using the OEM mat alone but might be an issue if you put a slip mat on top of it. Something to consider.

That said, I never use the clamp anymore since I deal with warps using the Vinyl Flat. Truth be told, I didn't have the patience to constantly screw and unscrew a clamp every time I flipped a record.

I have no experience with weights. I was always weary about adding weight to the table. Would love to hear others chime in on this though.

No issues adding a weight to the SL-1200. They are pretty much bulletproof.

Naïve question: what do people use weights for, generally? Better "marriage" of the record to the table? Would they make a difference in sound on the 1200?

Are they also good to address warps? I'm imagine they should work for upside-down dish warps...

Both reasons. You probably will not hear a difference in sound quality though. If you do, it’s likely to be minor.

I’ve never not had a Technics. I forget my first model # but it was belt drive from the 80’s. I still have my SL-1900 but can’t decide if I want to sell it or try to give it to the kids in a couple years. Main table today is a 1210GR. I can’t currently imagine wanting anything else.

I've never had one I looked into at a while ago & got in a bit of rabbit hole. I'm sure I read somewhere about challenges with clamps on the 1210 (but could be wrong) & some people claiming weight scan do damage. I ended up just buying more records & forgetting about it.

But some people do say they make a noticeable difference to sound. I wondered if anyone has used one & noticed an improvement?

I think this was the article I looked at last time that sort of convinced my, but not enough to actually buy one.

I didn't know you were "one of us"! Let me know if you want to be added to the first post.

I noticed no audible difference in sound using the clamp on my set-up.

Unlike when I changed the mat - that lightened up the sound if that makes any sense.

I use one because my mat has a 1 degree uplift on. But mine is as basic as you like. It's perfectly fine

Amazon product ASIN B07HB2LDYT
Every now and then they drop the price to 20 quid.

Anyone use, or have a preference on weights or clamps?
I used to use a clamp since I figured it was less stress on the motor than a weight but now that I use a cork mat my clamp can’t catch enough of the spindle if the wax is of any thickness so I have been debating a weight but have not yet purchased one.

I kinda want one of these mainly because They really enjoy the aesthetic but it might be a bit too pricey to justify for a weight.

The ultimate aim is this... Its just the mental barrier of that price for a bit of metal is tough to overcome

Did you replace the rubber mat for the cork one, or did you place it on top?

Man, if you are going to think big, think big!

(No, I’m not recommending anyone actually do this). 😎
