Upcoming/Recent Shows

From Bob Weir on Wednesday, to Flying Lotus on a Thursday. And actually a surprising amount of Dead/Tie Dye shirts at Flying Lotus.

Easily one of my favorite shows this year - stellar show across the board.

Started w/ Salami Rose Joe Louis - 4 piece jazz / fusion quartet. Great playing and vibe. Next up was Brandon Coleman which was an incredibly funky set. The man can play a keytar like nobody's business. Hadn't really done my homework on this show, so I had no idea who the openers were going to be but they both blew me away and I'd go see either of them again in a heartbeat. Flying Lotus came on, and the music/visuals were no joke, The 3D was really well done, and made for a totally engaging show.

Oh yeah, Hannibal Burress came out and did a little standup to introduce Flying Lotus too, that was pretty cool.

I finally got approved to shoot a Sigrid show after being rejected three previous times. The show was incredible. Listen to Sigrid.

Bourbon and Beyond this weekend. Skipping out on today for various reasons, but the past 2 have been a good time.

Last night I witnessed a truly special show...Brandi Carlile opened for Courtney Marie Andrews at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. It seemed surreal to see her in a 500 person venue after she just sold out MSG.

Not only that but they played a few songs together, Joni Mitchell's River and CMA's May Your Kindness Remain.

Ended up in Philadelphia unexpectedly last night. Drove my daughter & her friend to see Tyler, The Creator at a sold-out show at The Mann. Wife & I got tix from a seller outside and hung out, too.

Will Smith’s son Jaden was an opener, and wished his dad happy birthday and played part of the Fresh Prince theme.A1342AB0-8859-4A10-90A1-508134005602.jpeg

Fantastic show, even though Aaron was on doctor's orders not to sing. This band is so tight, and Durand is such a dynamic frontman.

Hatchie released one of my favorite albums if the year, and the songs translate great in a live setting. Looking forward to seeing where she goes next.

It's a busy couple of weeks... for me, anyway. I don't get out much anymore.

The Hold Steady - I hadn't seen them in a decade, but they hold a special place in my heart. Franz Nikolay is back; they sounded great and put on a really fun show.

Orville Peck - I really like, but don't love Orville's album. He puts on a GREAT show. He's got a set of pipes on him that are reminiscent of Roy Orbison (or something).

Daniel Norgren - Tomorrow night. I missed him last time through town, but am excited to see my #1 VMP discovery.

Ian Noe - He's playing a small club here on Tuesday. Another guy I found through you all (thanks).

Bon Iver - 2 weeks out. I haven't seen him since For Emma.

Spent Friday night & all Day Saturday at the Ohana festival. Been going every year, definitely the most crowded one so far. Beautiful venue right on the beach in Southern California. Some highlights:

Tash Sultana - Biggest surprise of the weekend. Wasn't that familiar with her, but perfect sunset set. She played just about every instrument imaginable, looping them together. Great stage energy too - just her, but she owned the big stage.

The Strokes followed up. They came on late, only had about an hour to play. Hadn't seen them before, nice to cross them off the list. Eddie Vedder came out and played Hard To Imagine with them, and then stuck around for an excellent version of Juicebox.

Paul Cauthen on the Tiki / Side Stage. Took me a minute to realize where I heard the name, remembered he had a VMP exclusive recently. Great voice, and his backing band is tight.

Glen Hansard - Always a joy to see Glen, he puts so much depth & passion into his performances. Eddie came out to play Smile with his band. Glen came back out during Ed's set to do a bunch more tunes too.

Eddie closing it out Saturday night on the main stage. Moved to the back as it got way too crowded at the front. Had a string quartet backing him up for part of the performance, with a particularly moving version of Black. Couple of good covers too. Talked about Chris Cornell and him listening to Daniel Johnston before playing Walking the Cow, also played Wildflowers.

As frustrated as I am with the lack of movement on the Pearl Jam camp, getting an Ed show is still a great experience. He's developed a great ability to connect with a big crowd w/ stories & singalongs.
