First show of the year for me was a big one. Waking Windows festival returned for the first time since 2019!

Biggest discovery of the weekend for me was Alex Cameron. Don't know how or why I slept on him for so long but he was super fun. Musically right down my alley. Francesca Blanchard was equally as good. Amazing voice and super fun stage presence.

So let's see if the picture uploading works again.
On Friday I've been to Scooter as my boyfriend likes their music a lot. It's some kind of German rave/ techno/ EDM band that started in the mid 90s and still is quite big over here. The concert was in the PDS Dome in Düsseldorf, a venue that holds around 14,000 people. The support was a DJ called Picco, who mostly played some charts music from the 90s to today.
The Scooter concert was impressive in their own terms, big light show and it was the first time to see such a large crowd partying since the start of Covid for me.

Don't really have any good photos, but it's been a busy concert season for my wife and I.
Started with Billie Eilish, then Spiritualized (I really should listen to them more), then we won tickets to Chicano Batman a couple weeks later.
This past Sunday we saw Smashing Pumpkins (my wife looked around in horror and said "are we at a classic rock show?"
Then in a few weeks we're going to see Failure, one of my favorites.

Last year it was more local shows (XIXA, Katie Haverly) but I did catch Perfume Genius (heart eyes!)

First show post baby birth tonight with Lucius.

The local radio station got us in at the VIP level for a little soundcheck and Q&A beforehand. Was disappointed they weren't signing records (I brought a few from home) but understand they were trying to avoid unnecessary interactions for health reasons.

Opener was Celisse, who KILLED it. Truly had the crowd eating out of her hand. Great voice. Good guitar playing. And her band was also phenomenal.

Lucius was everything I remembered from over a half a decade ago. The best harmonies in the game, hands down. New material is a little disco heavy, but I enjoyed the show and the reworkings of some older material.

So last week I had won free admission to the Bloc Party concert in Cologne. The venue is called E- Werk and is a a former electricity factory in a beautiful old building that has a little steeple. Its capacity is around 2000 people.

IMG_20220516_200628.jpg

Support band had been Dutch Indie quartet "Pip Blom", who did a good job. Though not arriving early I was able to get into the first row. The concert obviously wasn't sold out, maybe 3/4. To my surprise there had been many very young people in the audience, who wouldn't have been around when Bloc Party's career started. I think it's a great thing to see new generations discover that kind of music.

So Bloc Party played for around 80 minutes. They included many songs from new album "Alpha Games" which worked well live. Highlights had been the classic singles such as "Helicopter", "Hunting for witches", "Modern Love" or "Banquet". Singer Kele Okereke' s voice was really good. The crowd also was very engaged, you really can see more energy in concerts these days than before Covid. I've witnessed that in various concerts. Overall a great concert, and I was very happy I got in for free.

My mind has been rejuvenated and cleansed after experiencing another lineup on Sunday of ambient euphoria, headlined by the incredible Julianna Barwick.

Sontag Shogun x Lau Nau

SS is an ambient/experimental group of three members from different parts of the states, and Lau Nau hailing from Finland. Together, they put out an ambient LP Valo Siroutuu this year. Roughly half an hour set.
Honestly, this set was really breathtaking. Only two songs, with the first song being a medley of tracks which lasted roughly ~25min...reminded me a lot of the bright, cheery bright buildup of something from a Sigur Rós album (Takk... comes to mind) or GY!BE's "Storm" from Lift Your Skinny Fists..., very beautiful.

Malibu

A drone musician with a set lasting ~35min. She made full use of the venue's acoustics with lots of panning of the sound from side to side throughout the set, along with a headlight on stage moving side to side like a searchlight or lighthouse. Ocean sounds and audio recording samples were plentiful. The seat I was in was in direct line with the headlight for a majority of the set, so I was getting blasted with too much luminous intensity over the course of the set. Interesting, but my least favorite musician in the set.

Julianna Barwick

Beautiful set. Her use of several vocal harmonies layered on top of one another proves the point of how vocals are a criminally underutilized element/instrument of ambient music. She performed most of her newest record Healing is a Miracle and a few gems from her older works. One encore track of playing an improvised set of drones w/vocal loops, also gorgeous.
Third ambient show I've been to this year. Hoping for a Hinako Omori or Jeremiah Chiu/Marta Sofia Honer tour announcement soon to complete a live visit to all of my ambient favorites from this year.

I'd love to catch her again. Very mesmerized and in love with what I experienced. Ambient music is a joy in a live setting.

Saw Haim at MSG. Thumbs up emoji here.

last night saw Griselda (Westside Gunn, Benny The Butcher, and Conway The Machine)... been a while since I've seen a show with so many people on stage watching.
PXL_20220519_031410255.jpg

tonight saw Amyl And The Sniffers and howdy what a fucking amazing show... ears are going to be ringing for a minute from this one.

Amyl and the Sniffers are coming back the day after my birthday (yay!) but in a much larger venue (boo!), but couldn't help notice my little Aussie run of shows later this year.

Also I'm seeing OSEES on my birthday, so my ears are going to be fucked after that and Amyl..

My third time seeing Midlake. The Trials of Van Occupanther is one of my favorite album of the 2000s. I saw them the first time right after that album came out and the second time was opening for Pearl Jam a handful of years ago. Tonight was the best of the three shows…the band is on point.

Second time seeing Hatchie, with another enjoyable set!

Caroline Loveglow

Similar to Hatchie with timbre. Somewhat vaporwave, but a very familiar shoegaze sound. Set was under 30min and featured only two members with a backing track for percussion + bass.
Meh.

Hatchie

Once again, she was impressive. Set lasted just over an hour, and her band performed a healthy mix of tracks across Sugar & Spice EP, Keepsake, and this year's Giving the World Away. Some LED lights + strobe effects were an intended visual, but this particular venue isn't able to accommodate it well, so it was projected onto the ceiling and left side of the stage wall (not pictured below). She isn't one to go on a soapbox in between songs, so the set flew by without much empty space. No encore, even though she did one last time she visited in '19.
Glad to see her stop by again. She mentioned that a few of her previous stops on this tour have had a disappointing turnout, with this one bearing one of the more lively crowds she's seen.

Merch didn't interest me much at all; already have the EP and both studio albums, the most recent thanks to local friend @Matt M. Shirts were rather drab in design.
Waited in line to get my copy of Giving the World Away inked and got there after ~10min. I made the silly mistake of offering my silver (instead of black) Sharpie for a signature, as it has been drying up and it doesn't come out well on the mirrorboard jacket...oh well. Got a selfie with Hatchie as well after chatting with a few people afterwards and pondering about it near the merch table before heading out.
Yes, I know...crummy resolution.

Compliments these two well enough from last time:

Kind of disappointed I didn’t get her most recent signed. Left it at home without thinking. Picked up the other two though.
Glad you enjoyed the show. I can tell you in Columbus I felt that crowd was kind small but then again it was a smaller venue so maybe it wasnt that bad. Maybe 150 people? I’m not good at guessing that stuff
