Upcoming/Recent Shows

A few shows from the last week to go through.

Took a flyer to see Let's Eat Grandma at Grog Shop in Cleveland on Thursday.

Broken Keys was the first of two local openers to start off the show. Enjoyed his set, which was a mix of some Unknown Mortal Orchestra guitar stylings and atmospheric beats on top of modern r&b vocals.

Who Saved Who was next, and probably had the biggest following of the night, including Let's Eat Grandma. People were into it. I thought they were a solid fine, but very generic indie rock group. Bassist was the highlight, wearing overalls and grooving around his side of the stage. The other musicians, quite honestly, were pretty mediocre.

Finally, Let's Eat Grandma took the stage. These ladies sounded really, really good, but had lacking (understatement) stage chemistry and their semi-choreographed movements on stage came across as forced and unnatural instead of fun. It was awkward to watch, but boy did I enjoy what I heard. I'd say probably 100-120 people in the crowd, but I'm a poor judge.

Bought the new record after the show and after she signed it, Jenny was kind enough to take it backstage for Rosa to sign since she didn't come out to meet people at the merch stand.

Last night I was in the nosebleeds for Joe Walsh's VetsAid concert in Columbus, OH. Every artist on the bill had an Ohio connection, and Dave Grohl (Warren, OH) was billed as the "special guest".

The Breeders (Dayton, OH) started off the night. Their 14 song set was highlighted by a cover of Pixies "Gigantic" with Dave Grohl on guitar, although you couldn't hear it in the mix.

In fact, the mix would be a problem for any added musician, mostly Grohl, for the whole night.

James Gang (Cleveland/Kent, OH) were up next. They killed it and sounded super powerful and triumphant on stage. Walsh still sounds great and can really bring it on guitar. Jimmy Fox was POUNDING the drums. *chef's kiss*

Dave joined the band as a 2nd drummer for Funk #49, although he and Jimmy played it pretty straight and pretty much played the same things for most of the song.

The Black Keys (Akron, OH) were next. Played the hits, which was fine. Dan's vocals were super low in the mix and hard to hear at times, but overall an enjoyable set from the group who I've found to be uneven in concert delivery in the last decade. No special guests.

Nine Inch Nails (Cleveland, OH) was the group I was most curious about. I had never seen them before, but obviously I am familiar with their music. They easily had the biggest crowd of fans there, just by measure of applause and people rocking out. Their set really is a fantastic piece of performance art. I loved the way they used the video screen, in black and white, to highlight the chaos of lights and shadows throughout the set. Their use of space was also fascinating. Trent's presence on stage was commanding, and I definitely agree with those who say he's a Mt. Rushmore level of front man. My wife, whose taste in music recently has pretty much begun and ended in the Dualtone indie americana catalog for the last year, absolutely hated it. No special guests.

Finally, Joe Walsh came out for a quick set of his solo material. Dave played guitar on "Life's Been Good" and drums of "Rocky Mountain Way". The Breeders also provided backing vocals.

Overall, great night! Glad to cross a few off the list.

You'll have to let me know how their stage presence is. Wonder if they were just having an off night. They started the set by accidentally switching each other's in-ears and had to pause to unhook, switch, and re-hook. It was almost like they lacked confidence overall? Which they shouldn't, because they sounded amazing like I said. But I know how hard it is to get up there and actually PERFORM, so I don't hold it against them.

Plains were amazing. Katie lives in KC now with Kevin Morby so it was a hometown show and the last show of tour so there were some fun surprises.

MJ Lenderman was great too. He’s like if Crazy Horse played indie rock. I really want to see him play a headlining show.

The highlight might have been the late announced opening “set” by Plains drummer Eric. He wrote a bunch of hilarious songs about the tour and had guests pretend to play instruments in costumes while he sang. Katie is joining them here but that’s MJ Lenderman in the back dressed as a priest, Kevin Morby is in the white lab coat and Natalie Prass is in the neon wig. It was ridiculous and a ton of fun.

Ana Roxanne. Ethereally serene. Really summarizes her first ever Portland performance succinctly, truly. Late in posting from Saturday.

I went with a friend to this show (same one as Arooj Aftab this past September) and caught up with her half an hour before opener Rachika Nayar took stage. Got a beer at bar and went to look over the merch table, which had both Nayar's Heaven Come Crashing, Roxanne's Because of a Flower, and T-shirts for both artists. Opted to not get a T-shirt and waited for the performance to start.

Rachika Nayar

A new artist who dropped a very mesmerizing ambient/noise/experimental record this year; I enjoyed Heaven Come Crashing quite so. Her set lasted ~35 minutes with a very abrupt cutoff to the building noise in the climax. I didn't recognize any the passages in the set at all from her new album in her live performance. Still an enjoyable opener with plenty of variation in drones/guitar loops/experimentation.
The photos here are of poor quality, I know. Looking to upgrade my phone next year.

Ana Roxanne

Ana is one of my recent ambient favorites, discovered in the last three years thanks to the influential MP on my tastes. She is like an angel sent from above. She performed solo; her set went for only 45min, performing seven songs with one of those being a hypnotic cover of Julee Cruise's "The World Spins." She alternated between using electric bass and her mixing equipment, while providing ethereal vocals (some with vocal layering) on all tracks. In awe.
She performed four songs from 2020's Because of a Flower and a pair from her debut ~~~, all with extended runtimes to allow for the music to grow and permeate. I loved the cosmic slideshow backdrop as a presentational aid.
Might be my favorite ambient performance of the year. A toss-up between her and Grouper.

Not my video, but this is someone's recent video of a live performance of Julee Cruise's "The World Spins" from last year...before Cruise passed away this summer 😞 Ana's gentle voice is perfect for covering Julee Cruise's music:

Post-show

My friend and I were filled with wonder from Ana's performance and took a few minutes to let the performance wash over.
Not even two minutes later, Ana appeared back to the stage to take down her minimal equipment. My friend and I approached her in the front of the stage as people started to leave for the lobby/doors. She gave Ana heaps of praise and commented that she should sing more on her music (some of her songs are purely instrumental...but it's a 60/40 split). I brought both of my Roxanne LP jackets from home and she happily signed them. After I recommended that she come back to Portland on a future tour, she responded with a cute "OK!" after which we thanked her again for the performance.

I'll probably put this in my top10 of the year for now. Breathtaking.

The Smile @ Hammerstein Ballroom NYC.
If I had more of an attachment to the songs - I might have considered this a better show than any Radiohead show I've attended.

My neck hurts just looking at Johnny in that second photo.

He and Thom switched off playing bass and guitar.
Both were excellent on Bass - but he's a vastly underrated guitarist.
Some of what he was doing on the new songs was eye opening.

Tom Skinners' drumming may have ruined me for any further Radiohead releases if he's not involved with the percussion.

EXCUSE ME?! BE YOUR OWN PET?!?!
