MerleFest, anyone?

it's a blast if you've never been...

I wish this were the year, but not with the 19 month old....

While we're here and talking - what exactly is the difference between Brothers of a Feather and Black Crowes without any Crowes besides the brothers?

I was just watching a Marc Ford interview last night that basically said as soon as Rich was back in with Chris everyone in Magpie was just left out in the cold.

if you haven't already, you really need to get Steve Gorman's book 'Hard To Handle: The Life And Death Of The Black Crowes'. The audiobook is primo with Steve reading every word. Even if you don't give a rat's ass about The Crowes, it's a great read. So many things make so much sense after hearing Steve recount the stories...

I picked up the Gorman book on kindle sale but have yet to start it, the youtube interview is great so far

Brothers Of A Feather is just Chris and Rich. And it's good. This is what the last two years should've been instead of all the hired hands being passed off as The Black Crowes.

Over the Hill and the version of Darling of the Underground Press are a couple of my favorites from this release.

I very much enjoyed Magpie which was basically the Crowes without Chris.

Yeah. Back when there was the acrimony/spilt - I tried to like them.
Just could not get there.

I had way more respect for Chris trying to do the modern Grateful Dead/New Riders of the Purple Sage thing more than Rich trying to keep the Crowes money train flowing.

Chicago venues finally embraced ticketmaster and its making me miserable.

On the one hand I have a crazy May--
*Fever Ray
*Yeaji
*Yves Tumor

And then the LCD Soundsystem / Jamie XX / Idles show in June.

On the other hand, those 4 shows cost more than when I saw roughly 10 shows in 5 weeks early last summer.

Side note, I'm desperately trying to find a way to go to the Kilby Block Party in Salt Lake because Pavement and the Walkmen are both bucketlist for me and the undercard is wild.

Anybody else eying it?

Chris went public during the Magpie period and pretty much ridiculed Rich in every interview for being in a Black Crowes cover band. Not too long after all that, he trots out As the Crow Flies, his own Black Crowes cover band. And this illustrates those petty, hypocritical Robinson qualities that just make them completely maddening at times.

I was not aware of his own cover band.
Just looked it up.
Even with Audley Freed, I'd bet its was equally disappointing without RR on guitar.

I've never really been interested in the drama, just the music.

I'm also on the "Gorman was a good drummer, but its not like he's John Bonham or Neil Pert or Ringo Starr" side of the fence.
I don't consider him indispensable to what makes for a great BC record.
I always thought his "behind the scenes" stuff was just tacky sour grapes in the same way the infighting was just boring and eyerolling.

But - if the book is as fascinating as you say - Ill have to check it out now.
