Upcoming/Recent Shows

Day 3 of Sled Island contained the double bill that I was most looking forward to, and it was not a disappointment!

Though non of my friends knew them prior to this show, they absolutely loved Bully! Their comment was that they would have fit right into the Clueless soundtrack, which is high praise!

After Bully got the crowd amped up, they were followed by Hop Along. Fran had her signature raspy vocals emoting all night, and it made for an incredibly dynamic show (and my favourite photo that I got all week!):

Since we had no major "must-see" show after Hop Along, we decided to get dancing at The Hifi Club, where Louisville's Jack Harlow was performing. Not normally my brand of hip hop, but he had the crowd in the palm of his hands:

And finally on to Day 4 of Sled Island, where the marathon started early with their traditional Block Party. The one person we definitely had to check out was the one and only Har Mar Superstar, bringing the soulful grooves to the sunny environs:

The next show was a hike across downtown, but we rented bikes and zoomed over for perhaps the most mind-blowing show of the entire week: The Comet Is Coming!!! Holy hell, man...these cats are on a whole other level of musicianship:

We needed a bit of a recharges to finish off the day, so we stopped at the Palomino Smokehouse for some beer, BBQ, and a notable Calgarian hard rock band, Chron Goblin (Fun story, I used to work with the bassist of this band!):

Then it was time for one of the big shows of the week. Sled Island has a "Guest Curator" every year for the festival, and they pick a bunch of bands to come and play and perform a headlining set themselves. We've had some amazing Guest Curators the last few years: Deerhoof, Flying Lotus, Peaches, G!YBE. This year, it was Julien Baker, who picked an incredible array of artists (including many of the ones I ended up seeing). So when she stepped to the mic on Saturday, the house was packed and you could hear a pin drop. What an emotional show:

Somehow, after Julien destroyed us all, we still had energy to spare. So we headed over to local heavy music venue Dicken's Pub and caught a rip-roaring surf rock set from the legendary Man Or Astroman? It was an awesome way to wrap up a crazy week:

Har Mar Superstar is such an amazing live act.

Kishi Bashi @ August Hall, SF 6/12/2019

My first but definitely not last Kishi Bashi show. Such a fantastic show, he and his band brought the energy all night. Added bonus - hanging w @foks and I got a setlist.

Kishi Bashi at the Old Church in Portland. Amazing!

Enjoying the love Kishi Bashi and the crew is getting on here. This was my 7th Kishi Bashi concert, and probably the best, or at least stands next to his tour with the String Quartet. The fact that the cello/violin duo of Takénobu played with Kishi - along with Tall Tall Trees, Pip on Flute, and their bassist, guitarist, and drummer - added so much more string texture to the new music, which was incredible.

For this tour I saw him in NYC, at Murmrr, and after arriving at the venue I realized that our seats might be perfectly located for the encore, should they decide to come into the middle of the crowd. And yup, they set up right in front of us, as this picture shows. It was magical. Go see Kishi Bashi on the upcoming fall tour.

I saw the Beach Boys yesterday at the amazing Royal Albert Hall. Led by Mike Love and Bruce Johnston with Jeffrey Foskett, Tim Bonhomme, John Cowsill, Keith Hubacher, Christian Love (Mikes son) and Scott Totten. I was weary going in as a work colleague saw Brian Wilson live recently and described it as a saddening experience where they 'wheeled him on, he attempted some of the old songs without giving the impression he quite knew where he was or what was happening, then wheeled him off'. However, the Beach Boys last night completely killed it, so full of energy running around (as much as a couple of 76-78 year olds can) and I was completely shocked at how amazing their voices still are, utterly fantastic!

I checked for UK dates for Kishi Bashi and just got tickets to see him at the most amazing little venue in central London. I saw Nahko there last year and its fantastic, its below a railway tunnel hidden away but in central London (literally 5 mins walk from the Shard). Cannot wait for this!!!

Cool venue! I wish I knew about this when I visited London a couple months ago! Cheers!

Has anyone here see The Feelies before? I'm 50/50 on seeing them tonight, and leaning slightly towards doing it. I basically only know Crazy Rhythms even though I've been listening to the rest of their discography this week.

Caught The Ocean Blue with The Minders opening last night for Burnside Distribution 25 year anniversary. If you get a chance, see The Ocean Blue. I didn't know them well, but just enough, and they were freaking fantastic. And yeah, tickets were like $5. You know it's probably gonna be good when the crowd is full of musicians and engineers.

Just saw Paul McCartney last night - what a great show! He told some great stories and played for over 3 hours. Also had Steven Tyler come out to do Helter Skelter with him! Here's a few images and a video I took:

A few things: Keep it Like a Secret fucking rules to this day. They were pretty good, and Doug is still an amazing guitar player, but he was really trying his best to drown out his own vocals, which was kind of a bummer. Still had fun and got a great shirt tho.

Louisville has an awesome new live venue. I received some free tickets for the soft opening of the Old Forester Paristown Hall. It really is quite impressive.

Kingfish played a killer set, he's a 20 year old blues musician who deserves attention.

Villa Mure is a local band that was also great.
