Vinyl Me Please Anthology

There isn't a new CEO, he is the COO, he did talk a lot about efficiency but just from talking to him I didn't get the sense he was ruthless, that was just my sense. I thought he might actually be good for VMP, but it is all yet to be seen. I hope I am right but I am not holding my breath.

ah yeah COO, right. I mean, I'm sure all the guys you talked to are nice people.

So I'm a self published author, that's my full time job. I publish exclusively on Amazon, a notoriously enormous and straight-up fucking evil corporation, not sure if you've heard of them? Run by Jeffrey Bezos? anyway. About a year back they were having issues with their store and were talking to some indies about it. I got on a call with one of the higher ups in the Kindle Direct Publishing world, not a normal thing, and spoke with him for like forty-five minutes. He was incredibly nice and helpful and I genuinely liked the guy by the end. He seemed to get what I was saying and seemed to want to improve things for us. I left the call feeling good. And it didn't change a thing. I just thought of that story right now, dunno if it's the same situation or not. VMP is not Amazon.

I hope you're right too, that he's good for VMP and they start getting over some of their growing pains and start focusing on what made them feel so successful. I'm just not optimistic, like you. I think they could do something really cool with an anthology so I haven't written them off yet, either.

Well my notes finally showed up........

in a mailer, lol. They're totally fine. I'm almost disappointed that I don't get to write an annoyed email to VMP, but oh well. If they had just sent all these in a mailer, this wouldn't be an issue.

As per the notes themselves, well, it's not quite as cheap as I thought it'd be..... but it's pretty close. Saddle stitch is pretty cheap. Cover is pretty meh cardstock. I think they really wanted that shiny Blue Note foil but I'd much rather an actual bound book with a full gloss cover. And most important of all, content is sadly pretty thin, surprisingly thin honestly. Silver got the most word count but even that's not all that much. There's basically nothing about Montara. Overall, 4/10, another letdown.

I totally get that and while hopeful, I can just as easily see this as going the same way it did for you with Amazon. I will say it was more than thinking of him as a nice guy (which he did come across as) it was what he said and the intelligence behind it. I haven't fact checked it but his background seems solid and he has gotten results in the past with other places he has worked. The rest of the staff there don't have a business background and that clearly shows in how they have scaled up and choices they have made not only in the scaling but previous hiring. We will see.

If they had sent all of the notes in a mailer, it wouldn't have been an issue that the booklets were banged up. It still, however, would have been an issue that the booklet is poorly made and poorly written and that the wrong genres of jazz are assigned to some of the albums.

I have generally found the quality of the VMP classics booklets pretty good. Why each of the 6 releases did not get similar treatment is a mistake that I don't understand. They had time to write those. Plenty of time even.

I was really surprised seeing this tweet. How expensive can houses be wherever storf lives?

If I’m not mistaken, he lives in Madison, WI. I think houses are reasonably priced in the town but I’m not 100% sure anymore. No idea if he wants to live in the city or out though. I grew up in Green Bay and seeing the housing market there just makes me jealous. A house there easily goes for 3-4x that in the Denver metro area. Nothing is affordable here for young families.

I doubt Storf makes very much money. These types of companies are very top heavy, everyone below make peanuts. Also, a bungalow in Toronto starts at 1 Million so I'd imagine depending on his town it could still be pretty pricey.

😲 $1 million for a bungalow! And I complain that Dublin is absurdly pricey, you’d have to be in a very nice area to pay that...

Also probably slim pickings if he’s looking anywhere near the University.

You don't hire a guy whose only real credentials are writing a hip-hop blog because you want to pay him the big bucks.

My area is not bad, it's nice but it's not richy rich, that's 3 blocks south. Over there the houses are about 3-5 million.

Oh yeah there’s a road nearer the centre which is all big detached Georgian mansions. You’re looking €16million a house there...

Comically I used to rent a room in a kip of student house around the corner for peanuts and pass them all by on my way to catch the tram to work...

I’m 8 miles out from the city centre because it’s €300k for a 2 bed apartment out here, any nearer in and you need 2 incomes to make it feasible which is just shit tbh!
