Vinyl Me Please Anthology

the survey was good. probably could have been better, but for what they asked about it was nice to offer feedback.

when discussing future anthologies, i asked for a classical anthology. i wouldn't mind a label anthology (e.g. deutsche grammophon) of works from composers over different eras or an anthology of different era works by a specific composer/orchestra.

i did say that if they have an insistence to keep on working with now-again that they do it in anthology form because i have no interest in receiving any more monthly track records from that partnership.

I asked for a classical box set as well. I hadn’t thought of a deutche grammophon set, but that would be great. I’m assuming living stereo is not available and almost everything worthwhile has already been rereleased recently. I also said that I’d be interested in a Motown box.

they can partner with now-again all they want, and my comment is not meant as an insult to now-again as a label, i just don't need any more monthly track records from that partnership- they have been among my least enjoyed/least listened to aotms, and any argument that these are 'essential' or important records worth having in ones collection hasn't really ever flown with me (same goes for any new release records, while i'm on it). not to mention that these choices are specifically influenced by that partnership rather than being a record chosen organically. at this point in vmp's history, any track record put out is probably released with this influence present, but at least with a major label like sony/columbia we're getting things like fiona apple and the fugees where it can be argued reasonably that they are worthy of anyones record collection because of their popularity and importance/significance to their era. the now-again partnership would be better off utilized in a 'crate digger' type track (or an anthology).

I think they would love an excuse to partner with Now Again. Its a good lazy option - You could argue its a good choice but really its the easy choice for them. They have a good relationship now and could simply email : Got this great idea - can you pick 6 albums for our next anthology - oh and could do with a booklet also. Thanks.

I don't actually think that is massively far fetched. And if it sells in similar numbers - Its a great revenue source.

Question for y'all: What did you think of the fidelity/pressing/mastering on the Horace album? I'll preface this by saying I'm not familiar enough with the album to know how the OG sounds, but I found it a little flat. It's clean and dead quiet and still sounds great, but I found it lacking a bit in the highs, cymbals etc... Anyone with a previous knowledge of this one care to chime in?

I asked for a classical box set as well.
Interesting; I also suggested a classical music anthology. (Well, "classical or metal"). I've only got one classical music record - which I picked up recently - and I really like it. Of course, there are some vocals (Beth Gibbons) which may be helping the cause.

In regard to those requesting classical music sets- it has been my experience that diehard classical enthusiasts were the earliest adopters and biggest proponents of digital and do not prefer vinyl- digital allows performances uninterrupted by switching sides, and contains no chance of the crackle/noise or other vinyl imperfections that could greatly detract from pieces. I do see the point, and I don't know if a classical box would be widely embraced.

Audiophile pressings of Classical music can fetch giant prices. Like seriously you think Music Matters Over charges? There was a pretty wide reissue program by telarc last year, and many classical releases still receive vinyl releases. Plus this is coming for VMP’s audience not the classical audience. Jazz is often a genre that embraces technology too and the vast majority of jazz releases today do not receive a vinyl release, but still this very pricy Jazz boxset sold out during its preview period. and Jazz Vinyl has had a nice rebirth recently.

It’s all about marketing and gauging responses from the Facebook group, most people are still willing to give VMP the benefit of the doubt. The one thing VMP does do well is market to a FOMO audience.

It will be interesting to see if and how quickly the next anthology release sells out.

I also don't disagree with this. I bet if we had a Venn Diagram of FB VMP apologists and people with a room full of chase variant POP figures ...

I still think it is worth noting that the classical market is very tiny compared to the jazz market. I would be very surprised if a VMP classical anthology sold out. If it did, I think it would be evidence that most of the buyers are flippers/completely on the VMP hype train. I also don't see Storf or anyone else there curating a classical set, so I guess they'd have to go to Decca or DG or something and ask them to curate one for them.

EDIT: It also seems like it would be generally harder to come up with a bunch of classical stuff that isn't super niche, even within classical music, that isn't available cheap as an original, or been reissued a lot. Not to mention, if one is hard to find, there is probably another performance that many people like just as much that is easily available. I'm open to being wrong on this as it is definitely not my genre of expertise in collecting.

Back in the day (and it’s possible it was sev) they had some classical picks in the store and they were quite nice selections. I think the last time they had any it was the Telarc stuff.

Still waiting to hear back from info@ on my sleeve replacements. Granted, its only been a few days but we shall see how long it takes for them to respond. 3 out of 6 arrived damaged. Not the best % but what can you do?

If they did a classical one next, I definitely would not grab it. If you think the lack of "jazz school" with the first in Anthology was a let down, I am pretty sure what they did with a classical one would be absolutely terrible.

VMP is extremely lazy. Unless they found a label to do all the heavy lifting, it will just be 6 random records in a shiny box. VMP does not understand how to do value added.
