Vinyl Me Please Anthology

If they even try and put Built To Last in this box, they are shooting themselves in the dick again. In The Dark would make more sense if they want an 80s album.

The Dead has so much range that they better mix this shit up. Nobody ever mentions Wake Of The Flood, for some reason and I love it. I'd, personally, be cool with them just doing the albums which have suites:

Anthem Of The Sun
Wake Of The Flood
Blues For Allah
Terrapin Station

For the live stuff... maybe...

Europe '72
Reckoning
Two From The Vault
Without A Net

That's the type of weird shit I might do. I'm sure that this anthology will look nothing like this

You know how this fanbase gets when a Classics can be had for $7?

Can you just close your eyes with me and imagine them trying to sell Anthem/Wake/Blues/and Terrapin for nearly $40 a piece and the ensuing meltdown

I've already got the Warner box set, so I'm skeptical this will be worth it for me, but I'm intrigued. The big question is the live shows - sure, there are a ton of shows in the archive that haven't been pressed to wax, but what could they come up with that fits an anthology, hasn't been covered by Dick's Picks/RSD boxes, and also still worth it if each show isn't 3 to 4 LPs?

Regardless, I'm impressed/shocked they're doing this in the middle of a pandemic, with 20%+ unemployment. Maybe trying to take advantage of a delayed RSD? That 5x LP 5/9/77 set is still coming at some point this year.

I do not see the point in doing this box set with half studio albums. Essentially all of their studio albums sound good and all are in print or affordable except Without A Net, which I cannot see them doing. If you want to start with dead studio albums, just buy the rhinos or originals.

Just looking at what might need a reissue though, I think we can maybe expect Skull and Roses, Terrapin, Go To Heaven, Reckoning, Dead Set, and In The Dark. I can’t help but think this might be a pretty odd Dead set regardless of what they try to do with it. I’m probably out since it will probably be way overpriced. Not even sure what would make me absolutely need it either, and I love the Dead.

Ranged from the low 200s to right around 300. Boxes have been 6, 7, or 8 lps.

4 live GD albums is going to push this to 10-12 lp territory at least. Showing my work, 4 studio will be 4 lps and unless these are unreleased excerpts from shows like they have released in the past for RSD, you can count on at least 2 lps per live album.
Could the 4 Live LPs just be 1 live performance spread over 4 LP as opposed to 4 separate live albums?

I think the smartest move is to do audiophile editions of albums that haven't seen a recent MoFi release (which eliminates everything between Workingman's and Blues for Allah). Would also love the curveball they could throw of putting Bob Weir's Ace in, which is the Dead in everything but name and Grateful Dead Productions owns the rights to IIRC.

Something like:
Anthem Of The Sun
Ace
Terrapin Station
In The Dark

For the live archival releases, both Live Dead and Skulls & Roses have seen recent MoFis.

I think the best reception they could receive that is realistic and not duplicate eras above, would be:
Fillmore East 2-11-69
Europe '72
Reckoning
Without A Net

That is a 15 lp set.

I'm wondering if we are getting some live comps instead of full live albums...that box in the mockups doesn't look like it holds 15LPs hah. It looks similar to the Zam box which has 8 LPs. I'd be surprised because as others have said, this needs to have some stuff in it that most Dead heads don't have or hasn't been released before. 7500 copies is a LOT when they haven't been able to move 1000 in the past.

It's a little ridiculous to suggest that "The Story of the Grateful Dead" can be told in a 8 or 10 LP set. I wish they would make it focused to a particular period (The Pigpen Years) or some other theme to narrow it down a bit. Also, given that they were on Warner Bros, then GD Records, then Arista, it would seem like a set covering their whole career would be difficult to pull off logistically.

The label logistic are not as bad as it may seem, Grateful Dead Productions and Rhino hold all of the rights now. Agree that 8-10 lps means that this is going to be a completely barebones set (For example, Europe '72 or Without A Net, which both need re-release badly, i.e. nowhere has a recent reissue in stock, are each 3 LPs)

In theory they could be putting this out on vinyl and it would be 4lps, they have only done half of it already:

That would be such a waste. It's not a bad compilation, but it was a hard pass for just about every Deadhead I know. I have the vinyl set (was a gift) and its fine. It's a good overview, but Deadheads are really anti-compilation and pressing 7500 of these would be another dud.
