Vinyl Me Please Anthology

I find it extremely unlikely that this set will include a previously unreleased live show. Putting out previously unreleased albums has not been the MO for Anthology (or VMP at all really with a few exceptions, e.g. Nat Turner), and the description posted earlier said 4 studio albums, 4 live albums. That sounds like a pre-existing live album to me, not a live show that VMP is releasing for the first time as an album.

New here, Hi!

I've recently (past year or so) gotten pretty big into the Dead (thanks Time Crisis!) I only have Dick's Picks 24, Saints of Circumstance and GarciaLive Vol 1 on vinyl, so anything in this set will be welcome. I'm hitting refresh and hoping to score on this, as I've seen how quickly 20k copies of something can go on dead.net... I don't expect this to last too long.

When you see a 20k pressing of Dave's Picks sell out fast on dead remember that they didn't put 20k up for sale, they pressed 20k and they are selling the leftovers after all the subscribers orders are filled.

We’re also talking about a 30 dollar CD that is almost certainly the only time the show will get an official release and not even be available on streaming services afterwards. Not a 300 dollar box set with previously released material you can hear for free on Spotify

Isn't that scarier for this release though? A large chunk of those 20k are people who will spend $120 on a subscription for titles not even announced yet.

I think the smartest move is to do audiophile editions of albums that haven't seen a recent MoFi release (which eliminates everything between Workingman's and Blues for Allah). Would also love the curveball they could throw of putting Bob Weir's Ace in, which is the Dead in everything but name and Grateful Dead Productions owns the rights to IIRC.

Something like:
Anthem Of The Sun
Ace
Terrapin Station
In The Dark

For the live archival releases, both Live Dead and Skulls & Roses have seen recent MoFis.

I think the best reception they could receive that is realistic and not duplicate eras above, would be:
Fillmore East 2-11-69
Europe '72
Reckoning
Without A Net

That is a 15 lp set.

For opening the Bobby gate, you're getting Heaven Help The Fool

I’m just VERY curious, as I’m sure you all are, what will be in the box. As others have said, with how intense Deadheads can be, if VMP doesn’t get this right they will be crucified and stuck with 7000 copies of this. Even with the Blue Note box, there were tons of complaints because jazz listeners are fickle and VMP didn’t pay attention to a lot of details (I.e. one of the albums had a CD scanned cover with the wrong vinyl catalogue number on it). But with the BN box I thought the album choices were pretty great and not super obvious picks. Even with the other anthologies, for the most part, they didn’t do the “obvious” picks. I’m just hoping they announce the records instead of the “mysterious reveal” crap they have pulled in the past. With Zamrock at least they announced the albums when they went on sale.

Whats-in-the-fucking-box.gif

Another thing is that, with the Blue Note box, that was the very first anthology and the drop was totally botched from the start. The price point was pissing people off, especially since it was presented to us as something that would make all of us feel a lot better who were simply waiting for our Nat Turner or Weyes Blood records. Then they validated the price with explaining all of the features of a new community and videos, etc. I haven't done any of the anthologies, but I remember seeing them say, at one point, that they just decided to scrap some of that. The thing is, they continued to charge for that shit. It's an unfortunate thing with VMP, they just wait for people to get used to whatever new bullshit they pull, and once the uproar dies down, they forget about it. When they jacked the prices up on records there was a little blowback, but they left them where they were and just shut the forum down. Now the $30 plus albums are just how it is.

Dead fans will likely be disappointed, but there were a ton of people with disposable incomes who thought a Blue Note anthology would be a good way to get into jazz and there will likely be the same thing happening with this one. If it's not very good, they'll still sell it to people who don't know any better or completionists that want the one thing in there that they might not have.

Not really. Heads are hungry for new releases and the series has been going on for so long, and done so nearly flawlessly, that people know what to expect. Dead.net stuff has its issues, but DP’s have always consistently delivered in terms of product, shipping and handling, artwork, packaging, and quality of sound and music. Plus the early bird subscription is 100, free shipping, and a bonus disc of never released music. So 4 and a half shows for 100, it’s not a bad deal when you know that you’ll, at worst, probably love at least 3 and at least like the other.

Agreed, the subscriptions are available for a few months and have never sold out. The resale market on the Dave's series is fairly healthy as well.

A lot of Deadheads are in the full show only crowd and won't purchase compilations. Vinyl releases on dead.net simply do not move as quickly as CD releases do for the reasons described throughout this thread.

No. The subscription is just a great deal- it's $100 for the four releases plus a subscriber only bonus disc and free shipping. When they go on a la carte they are almost $40 shipped. There are tons of subscribers because it's more practical and it's always unreleased shows.

this VMP box i swear is going to be aimed at the novice.

I hope it's aimed at the novice.

according to this

Workingman's Dead
American Beauty
Live Dead (2LP)
Europe '72 (3LP)
Wake Of The Flood
Terrapin Station
Reckoning (2LP)
Without a Net (3LP)

So dead fans how is this as a novice box?

A good novice box, but honestly the only one you can't find a good copy for $20 or under is Without a Net (from 1990 tour, and admittedly not my favorite era of the Dead).
