Vinyl Me Please Anthology

I'm fine with waiting a little more for the $15. Maybe we'll get some more discounts to lower the effective cost

Same. I don't need it right away especially if the QA is being done efficiently up front and there is no need for replacement sleeves, discs, etc. A 4 week delay on something like this would be common in the vinyl world anyway.
I appreciate the email and the $15 though. Expected considering the cost, but still happy it was done.

I wouldn't mind the box itself and the Without A Net. Then I could fill the box with the other studio recordings that aren't in the other box sets (the oft-maligned "disco dead"). I don't think it'd hold all the non-boxset live stuff.

They still have the "first 3,000 customers to buy the box get a free slipmat" banner up. I'm wondering if some people cancelled it as well...
And this is the scary part for VMP on something like this:
Let's assume they still have the free slipmat offer up because 3,000 units have not yet been purchased. Assume average selling price of ~$425 (assume 50% who purchased had the $50 coupon). If they've sold 2,999 copies, that's $1.275M in revenues. With 7,500 copies pressed, and a list price of $450, the maximum revenue achievable is $3.375M. It makes you wonder what their break even point is...

Let's be generous and assume that VMP makes a very healthy all-in margin on these sets at 50% (it's likely much lower, but we'll go with that). That would imply the total cost of the run, to VMP, was $1.594M. Let's assume they've incurred the full amount. So with 2,999 copies sold, they're $320K in the hole. And that's probably a best case scenario. I wouldn't be surprised if they were struggling to sell just 2,000 copies and make less than 35% on these.

I don't think the timing of the Dead Anthology -> Price Hike is accidental. They want their customers to save them after poor business decision after poor business decision. This was the exact wrong way to do a Dead set and the poor sales are evidence to that.

Someone brought up that maybe they didn’t actually press all 7,500 yet, which would be smart...so VMP probably didn’t do that hah.

I also think they would be CRAZY to have done this set at numbers they did if they hadn’t already gotten a deal in place to sell wholesale to Acoustic Sounds and other places (like Vinceron lol). With them pushing back another month or so to deal with an issue with the box printing errors, I wouldn’t be surprised to see these starting to pop up at AS in a month or so.

I did notice that Vinceron has quite a few of the Motown box set albums available for sale as single LPs for around $20 shipped. They must have some sort of deal with VMP to buy replacement stock or SOMETHING...I don’t know that Vinceron would have bought a bunch of box sets and split them into single LPs to resell for less than cost...

Vinceron has the full box up for $202 and honestly, I think it's really worth it at that price. Anyone that missed the original should buy it. And I know, Vinceron is evil or whatever and I'm perpetuating the vinyl second hand bubble market and propping up flippers etc etc............ but still.

Also, holy shit, I'm assuming VMP sold Vinceron some boxes at a big discount, and Vinceron's able to sell that box at $202 and still make a profit... which means that these $300+ boxes are insanely marked up bullshit, which obviously we knew, but still.

The only thing I have noticed with the V-word is that when they can't move things quickly, they knock it down to pretty much retail cost. I do assume that they are getting things at a wholesale price from VMP though in some cases. They were selling Aretha for $20 shipped at one point. What was retail for Motown again?
