Vinyl Me Please Anthology

I have the AP 33 Headhunters and it's one of, if not the best sounding record in my collection. I'll likely upgrade to the 45 at some point but I honestly cannot imagine how it could sound much better. So I can at least say that no one will be disappointed if they grab the AP 33 for a few dollars less.
Im getting lazy in my old age and am actually starting to go 33 over 45 just so I can spend another few minutes sitting on my arse and not having to get up and flip another record, dick about getting things in and out of sleeves and wash an extra 2 to 4 sides.

I'll take idle over quality. Proper grim

Hahaha I used to try to avoid 45s but the few that I have sound so incredible that I can't help myself when I have the opportunity. But the AP 45s are like $90+ up here so it's a bit of a tough sell to fork that our when this one already sounds so incredible.

What don't you have in it?
I don’t any of the albums in the Boxset apart from Takin’ Off and Head Hunters.

But I’m not completely satisfied overall with the albums that were picked to be in the Boxset. I wanted more fusion and more Mwandishi era Herbie in there!

I like Mr. Hands more than a lot of the albums chosen to be in the Boxset!

pressed at GZ puts me off. If it was free shipping I would maybe go for it, but I think I’d rather spend the money on some AP records

I was doing some hunting round last night and as ever internationals are knackered by the import prices slapped on AP/ MF/ MM. Scott Nagle is as low as I could find them and even then its £165 just for headhunters and Maiden Voyage. The whole VMP box with shipping is £60 more. OK I'm comparing 45 APs with whatever VMP put in there which is possibly like comparing apples to mclaren racing cars but still.... I mean I love free health care and all that but its still annoying.

I wasn't drinking anything at the time of reading this. So, I stopped. Grabbed a bottle of water. Took a mouthful. Then read it again just so I could do a spit take all over my computer screen (don't worry it's a work computer).

Good on you!!!
Thank you! I’m a little bit bummed because I was super excited but it’s no big deal! 🙂

Amazon doesn’t accept PayPal, so all VMP store exclusives that I like will be paid via PayPal with the extra money I made off selling albums! 😇

Absolutely not. Where have you been? I know Australia is in the upside-down but it's not also under a rock. You knew that was a silly question when you asked it.
Yeah, and I just played my copy not long ago and was really impressed! I still am going to buy the 45RPM pressing when it comes back in stock at Acoustic Sounds! I wish Analogue Productions did more Herbie Hancock titles, especially the fusion era! Getting an AP pressing of Secrets, Sunlight or Thrust would be awesome!

This isn't one for me, but i know it sucks when even @NathanRicaud is passing on it.

For months Nathan has been like, "i have to maintain my record spending budget to under $10k a month and also budget for the Herbie anthology!"
I want someone to cuddle me now because I’m sad that this Herbie Hancock doesn’t meet my expectations...🥺

I honestly thought it was going to be pressed at QRP, mastered by Kevin Gray, just like the Blue Note Anthology Boxset! I was prepared to be like “Yaaaaas, 8 Classics Herbie Hancock ROTM’s in a Boxset! So happy!” 😅

It’s ok though but this is the first time I think I’ve been so hyped for something, only to be so disappointed, especially when it’s a Boxset! 😩

On the flip side, the Sadé Boxset will be an absolute treat to spin! I’m looking very forward to spinning that one when it comes! 😄

Cuddle you?! Shouldn't you be happy?!

I would understand being upset about not being able to get something that DOES exist.

But...not spending money on something that DOESN'T even exist (i.e. the box you thought it would be) - you should be thrilled. Money for other things like equipment instead of records, other records, a date night, yummy food, savings!

It sounds to me like you won the day! Also....:) 🥙 🎆

OMG YESSSS! I forgot about the record cleaning machine and Rega Exact MM cartridge I wanted to buy!!! I’m totally going to buy one of them soon! I think I’m going to actually get the Pro-Ject Record Cleaning Machine! Only thing is that it’s expensive at AUD$899! I’m gonna buy it very soon though as I barely clean my records - and I’ve got so many audiophile pressings too! So happy now! 🥳🙌🧞‍♂📌🌻🌈😇

I have won the day! 💪

I am more happy now! I think I just got caught in the moment because I’m laying in bed typing this! Like I wanted someone to just throw wrap themselves over me and comfort me because I was up all morning excited about Herbie Hancock only to be disappointed because of my music taste/preference and what albums were selected! A weighted blanket is not enough to comfort me! I want someone to be my blanket! 😂😂😂

But I am actually really happy thinking about it now because I need to get that record cleaning machine!!! It’s very much needed as I’ve got so many crackling vinyl from misusing the Spin Clean and just a lot of noisy vinyl in general!

This Boxset doesn’t suck in my opinion! It’s a great Boxset with nice selections! The selections just didn’t impress me; I was underwhelmed by them because of my music taste! I’m sure the albums in the Boxset will actually sound magnificent and that many Herbie Hancock fans will really enjoy this one! I’m still just a little bit put off by the albums getting pressed at GZ, even though I know these will sound great!!

You're going to talk yourself into ordering this. I can feel it.

Nah, I’m not purchasing the Boxset! Baby Monster isn’t buying the Boxset for good! I’m still quietly hoping that I can grab Future Shock and Maiden Voyage by themselves for a great price; a bit how like Vinceron is selling some of the titles from the Motown Anthology Boxset on their own for good prices! ☺️👍

I've been doing some more tallying (bit of a mental block on the paper I'm writing so it's a nice distraction). For me Taking Off, Maiden Voyage, Headhunters, The River (which is actually my favourite in the box - Herbie/ Norah combos rule) are pretty much the albums I know and I can pick them up in various forms for about £220. That makes the Future Shock, VSOP, 1+1, The Piano and live about £10 an album.

Still not doing it but broken down like that it makes marginally more sense

Don't do it.
Buy the albums you want and you will be happy with.

...and any Herbie collection that doesn't include Inventions & Dimensions or any VSOP material is kidding itself.
Live Under The Sky is from VSOP
People (at least on Reddit) keep thinking Herbie hand selected these albums from everything in this anthology but I’d be willing to be almost anything that they gave him a list of 12 albums they had access to and he chose 8 of them. There no way he chose these out of his entire discography.
I also doubt that he had free reign over every album BUT I stand by my points that these are in-line with the albums he mentioned as having a special significance in his autobiography. The only ones that I am not familiar with are the 1+1, which makes total sense considering its a joint album with Shorter, and The Piano, which is his best selling records in Japan, a country he mentions as being one of his biggest fan bases.

The only other album that stands out as him giving it a special mention in his book was Mwandishi, but even then he talks about a specific live performance during that era over the album itself.

Listened to the Piano this morning via the hi def Qobus version and it's a really, really good. Stripped back, acoustic standards are definitely my bag. Loved it

I streamed it last night (youtube so not the greatest quality) and I also love it, Sonrisa especially is just stunning! Herbie originally trained as a classical musician and I hear strong hints of that training tied in there.
