How would you leave off his work with Miles?
This is the killer for me. I understand HH has a varied career. But seriously. No Miles? Nothing?! Burn a CDR and tape it to the inside of the box or something, jeez.

I can see not including Miles in so much as the box set would bloat out of control. I think an anthology of his career as a bandleader is more than worthy, and Miles records would shift the focus away from him. Of course, a well written piece about him will include those formative years and pique any interest in a look back. This is besides the point that the box in and of itself isn't the best reflection of his career as a bandleader; but I, personally, don't see any foul in leaving out Miles. This is the killer for me. I've become worryingly interested in this thing as the day has progressed. Massively regretting listening to The Piano this morning.Only just noticed this in the email I got for the VMP Anthology:

"First edition"--does this mean it will get a larger repress later?
I hope they just decide to press more of them as individuals. I would like to grab 2 of these on their own, but I'm not getting the whole set.Only just noticed this in the email I got for the VMP Anthology:

I said it earlier to someone else I believe but if you are digging the albums and think you'll give them somewhat regular spins, go for it. I haven't had any complaints about the quality of the Anthologies I have purchased so far (Zamrock and Blue Note). The BN one in particular really is fantastic. This set seems to have some exclusives in it too which is nice. I think at worst, if you get it and decide you don't listen to it as much as you want, you could likely re-sell and get most of your money back, if not more.I've become worryingly interested in this thing as the day has progressed. I've the BN box and agree. It's ridiculous they've included an album that has just been reissued by someone else though... Or that blue note would sign off on it.I said it earlier to someone else I believe but if you are digging the albums and think you'll give them somewhat regular spins, go for it. It's The Piano and Joni that's got my interest piqued as they'll be played the most. Wonder if they've included the bonus tracks on Joni?I'm in. I only have Takin' Off on BN80, this doesn't ship until Winter and I can sell my copy and get $15-20 bucks off of what this cost. I think this is on the high side of reasonably priced for what it is, but I think I'd enjoy a deep dive into Herbie.
If I were you I'd wait until you get it to sell the BN80, it would be worth comparing them as it is definitely not a given that the VMP version will necessarily sound better or be better pressed.I'm in. Agreed. If you don't have more than 1 of the albums in this set and like jazz, it's not a bad deal. It is a shame that Takin Off was included since a high quality AAA already exists for $20 or so (I think I paid $18 for mine). I ended up skipping this box and ordering HeadHunters AP instead.I wonder if that means some of the others are getting wider releases? Wouldn't be the first time. And it's not like all the other albums are exclusive?
Dunno. With the discount though, this set isn't bad. I just have 4 of the albums already, and the three I want were easy to find. Listened to 1+1 this morning and wasn't super into it, so easy pass for me. But someone into jazz, but doesn't have any of these albums? I'd say it's not a horrible deal.
@TCell put together a nice list from what I saw last of a guess of what might be in the box. Someone on reddit did a list too.So with some other Anthologies, I have put together a cheaper version off discogs just because I was interested in hearing the music, not necessarily audiophile versions. Normally, I would do the same w/ Herbie, but with some discussion on why these particular albums were chosen, I have some qualms. Has anyone put together a list of what they would have done for a Herbie boxset? *Disclaimer, Mr Hands is only Herbie I own. Sorry if RSR applies here...

Empyrean Islands and Maiden Voyage are the two real expensive ones on that reddit list in terms of getting audiophile copies.
I could have sworn that one is getting a reissue from BN soon but at this point I have been mixing up all of the different reissue series since there are so many announced! Also, Speak Like a Child, which is one of my favorites
You know? I think this Anthology has shown me that the whole VMP Anthology thing isn't for me. Herbie is possibly the artist in any genre I've listened to the most in the last 5-10 years. Whether its his albums as a leader, his many sideman sessions, or his tenure in the best group in jazz history, I listen to his playing pretty much every other day. What about you @agutierrezb ? What are your thoughts on the Boxset with the album picks, to the pressing details, and USD$289 price (USD$50 international shipping)? Overall, do you like this VMP Anthology?
This is sort of why I went in on the BN box and Zamrock. With the BN box, I didn't own any of the albums in it, love the label and had been looking for affordable audiophile quality pressings of Schizophrenia and Montara. I also had some money saved up so it was a purchase I was comfortable making. And the Zamrock box wasn't too crazy price-wise IIRC, was a genre I have always liked but never did a deep dive and many albums were expensive to track down. I would have gone in on the Dead box too if the price was way cheaper.I guess the only way a VMP Anthology would make sense for me is if I had zero knowledge about the artist/label, yet had a lot of interest in it, and a lot of disposable income too. Otherwise, I don't see why I would spend $300-$450 USD in one of these boxsets.
