Vinyl Me Please Anthology

It seems pretty evident that levels of QC exist at each plant and that is priced into the cost of records, but people seem to not realize it. Supposedly about half of the SRX vinyl that MMJ made were rejected by QC which is part of (but not all of) why they are priced so high. Meanwhile, the BN75 had so many QC issues but they were priced at something like $12 MSRP so that's why. They pressed at a cheaper plant who didn't do much by way of QC.

VMP likely paid an absolutely insane amount for the Dead rights on this box set. So on the flip side, they likely didn't pay in the highest band for prime QC because of that. Otherwise they would have charged $600/box.
You added the second paragraph after I responded. Sorry but $600! Seriously! For that many albums? For $400 I’d be feeling slightly robbed and wanting perfection. Thats already way over my “I’m paying for actual QC“ barrier. For $600 I’d want all that perfection and lashings of audiophile snake oil on top!

Disc 2 Live/Dead warped. Some tics. Honestly something is different about these pressings, QRP are usually automatic with this stuff, clean quiet pressings, flat, nice smooth rounded corners. These are nothing like that, warped, no fill, random pops, corners aren't rounded and in several cases are actually gouged like this... I don't know why but these are way off from QRP standards.View attachment 73029
Omg, that is so bad! Way off QRP standards! I hope the people at QRP see this because I don’t want them to start cutting corners in quality control!

i really do wonder if they are overworked and overproducing... maybe they dont have as much time for quality assurance, maybe they can't plate enough, maybe its some other issue.. i just know something might be going on at QRP

I was being sarcastic about that price haha but it does seem that VMP cut corners on the QC side of things and I bet they got killed on the licensing deal. Had they tried to go top notch QC they would have charged over $450 for it.

I’m still blown away that they thought they would somehow sell $3+ million in box sets when they first announced it.

At some point, they should have just thought better of it. Shoddy QC on a $450 box is something that will come back to bite you. If you can't make a great box at 450 with minimal issues, then you shouldn't make a box at all for that price.

Which is insane for VMP. I could buy all the first 8 Dylan albums on MoFi at 45RPM for $430 at list. VMP aren’t capable of that quality level. Box sets universally cost less per unit than the individual price outside the box. This hubris they’ve built up around themselves and this shitty anthology concept is just gross and offensive. 14 discs over 8 releases at their level, thats $250, $300 tops.

Oh I agree with ya 100%. I haven't even seen many box sets listed at that price to begin with. The other anthologies were much cheaper prices (and still expensive even though I got 2 of them) so that's why I assume they got killed on licensing fees. They also probably thought they could rope in a lot of Dead fans but a lot of Dead fans didn't seem to be into the box since they had most of the records already. And the fact that they suddenly dropped it from 7500 to 2500 without really telling anybody kinda tells you how well the experiment went...

VMP is gonna VMP. You just know Lloyd Star or someone wanted to do a Dead box at any cost and thought they could sell it and people would lap it up. But once again, they don't know their customers. I truly think they could have sold out a large chunk of the 7,500 boxes if the price was substantially lower. If it was at $300 even, I bet way more people would purchased the box set (hell...I probably would have picked it up too).

Yeah considering what you got in them all the anthologies have been grossly overpriced. Just look at the Bowie boxes, I paid €250 each for 12/13 discs of true legend. The Kinks box. €160 for 9 releases over 10LPs. I could list so many others. Also bonus, none came with links to clueless storf podcasts 😂

bernie grundman and QRP weren't the most expensive parts of this box set despite the fact they SHOULD have been (i mean think about it if we are talking about quality those are the major selling points for a high priced audiophile box). the expense came from getting the grateful dead license as well as the fact they payed a ton of people to do interviews about why they love the dead....

john darnielle, david longstreth, avey tare, jim james, these people cost a good amount of money. they were already asking for a lot with the slipmat for the first 2000 and the license to do 8LPs... but getting many high profile people to interview was just asking for cutting corners

I still feel okay with the BN anthology price since they do sound fantastic and at least there’s a true exclusive in that one (for now). But yes—overall they have been very pricey compared to a lot of those other box sets. I really like the Day of the Dead box set and I paid $100 for it. I believe list price was $140 on it for 10LPs.

I truly doubt the podcast interviews cost much at all in the grand scheme of things. And if they did, it was stupid of them to do so. Nobody bought the box set to hear what Jim James has to say about the dead. The slipmats probably cost next to nothing too. The licensing and poor reading of the room (and the ego of VMP) are what caused the price to be so high.

The Bowie boxes are ridiculous value. I paid £150 a box for the 3 I have and mainly recouped that selling knackered older copies of the albums that are in there. I'd say that there are a few corners cut (like two 'David Live', doubling up Lodger and S2S) but at that price they're a steal.

I'll never be able to justify what I've paid for this in a million years but had come to accept that I was going to buy it and was pretty excited. There is a a poster on Hoffman that has A/B'd the Rhino Live/Dead and the VMP and they claim the VMP absolutely blows it away. I've got that 2003 and it's great so up until the pics from Mather's started coming in I was actually hopeful. Not so much after the last couple of pages on this

Hey man, if that poster got a good one, you can too. Christ if I had a different cart I might have a good one too! (Well except for the no fill and the warps and the scratches and all the other stuff..) Have faith, you might be all good! Look on the bright side, I've steeled you for the absolute worst case scenario, I mean what else could possibly go wro-WAIT DON'T ANSWER THAT

Oh man, you jinxed it. I'd have a fire extinguisher to hand when you play your next LP.
